Publisher's summary
The future hangs by a thread. Wisdom and kindness are a luxury. Freedom is balanced against the promise of tomorrow.
Argrave's harrowing journey to the Burnt Desert left him at death’s door, but breathed new life into his group by adding a fresh face to the party… if a severed head on a stick can be considered a proper companion. His goal is in sight within this foreign land with a tradition of hostility, and the royal bastard stands at the cusp of becoming black-blooded.
All of the magic, components, and requisite skills are close at hand. But the closer the team gets to their desires, the tighter the web of impending conflict tightens around them—a web woven with the threads of zealous devotion by the god Fellhorn’s despotic followers. Even with how hard they struggle to succeed, there’s no way to know if the inscrutable, unstable Alchemist will be willing to perform the procedure or eradicate them on the spot.
Just as worrisome is knowing that even if they can convince the Alchemist to take the job, he can demand any price for his services: body, mind, or even soul.

In the blink of an eye, a wiki editor’s deep and somewhat unhealthy understanding of a game becomes useful, usable knowledge when he inexplicably replaces the once-cruel royal bastard. Before he can start to push his frail body to use his deep understanding of the lore to handle the imminent apocalypse, or go off to stop an invasion, there’s a more personal task he needs to handle first. His cousin has a knife in her hand, and death in her eyes.

It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

Story
Alana wasn’t always a child of the Kingdom of Bergond. In fact, she hails from an entirely different world. But an accident on Earth left her dead, and she was reincarnated as the daughter of a farmer and his wife in the hamlet of Orsken. Now, she’s learning how to live in a land vastly unlike that which she came from—and how to wield the new powers she possesses. In just seven days, the world will crumble. The System's Descent will usher in a new era of chaos: wild animals mutating, monstrous creatures emerging, and the cessation of modern technology. Humanity will be left defenseless. Drew Wright knows none of this. At least not until he is rudely ripped from his bed and thrust into a white room to undergo a taser-happy ‘Tutorial’. Turns out, he is one of a thousand randomly selected people to be forewarned of the approaching apocalypse. Now, he faces the delightful task of convincing his wife and mother of the devastation hurtling towards them.

Story
Alvin woke in a room that was not his, to discover that he had died and his brain had been bargained off cheaply to pay off someone else’s debt. It did not sit well with him. It didn’t surprise him that even in death, people were still using him for their own purposes. He had never exactly been a good guy, but everyone had their breaking point, and he had found his. The bastards in charge had uploaded his mind into a virtual death game. The whole world could now pay to see him play it and probably die. Regardless, he was not about to wait for death to come for him.

Moves the series along splendidly
My only remorse is that we lose 1 companion of the fellowship in exchange for, er, one and a half. This last side quest is to become black-blooded, a process needed to improve his health and make Argrave more sturdy, something he knows has to occur if he has any chance at defeating the series final boss. There is relationship blooming between Anneliese and Argrave and a rift that develops between Argrave and Galamon that threatens their relationship. The lands they must traverse to acquire the black-blood enhancement is one of the more morbid I've experienced in a long time. Suffice it to say, the price people have to pay to get water in a dessert is extreme.
Luke Daniels' performance was enjoyable.

Good continuation
The main story progresses, with some character growth from our trio. A side adventure that takes up a large portion of the story but does add to the main objective. Overall I enjoyed this one and look forward to the next one.

Slow start, strong finish
Personally for me, I found the first half rather dull, but once you get past a certain part, everything becomes much more interesting. The first part is required for what comes after, but it just felt laborious to get through.
