About this listen

Jane Eyre, the plain yet spirited governess, introduced a new kind of heroine in literature - one whose virtuous integrity, sharp intellect, and tireless perseverance broke through class barriers to win equal stature with the man she loved.

Orphaned and subjected to cruelty at Lowood charity school, Jane nonetheless emerges unbroken in spirit and integrity. The story of how Jane becomes governess at Thornfield Hall, meets and loves Mr. Rochester, and discovers the impediment to their lawful marriage transcends melodrama to portray a woman's passionate search for a wider and richer life than that traditionally accorded to her by Victorian society.

Hailed by William Makepeace Thackeray as "the masterwork of a great genius," this impassioned love story is still regarded, more than a century later, as one of the finest novels in literature.

This was way better than I had expected...

I have read Jane Eyre a few times, but evidently the books I read must have been abridged. I was so glad to hear it all. I so enjoyed it!

The perfect Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre tells her own story--how independent she is in ways unexpected for the time period! Because the book unfolds in the first person, the narrator has to be good in order to bring Jane to life. Nadia May has recorded many of Jane Austen and George Eliot's novels and her nuanced readings are a delight. I loved this version of an old classic.

Classic

Lovely and classic novel. If you liked House of 7 Gables or Persuasion, then this is a great choice, too.

Best Performance

This reader and her voices are easy to listen to even with the old-English style writing of the book. I think her voice is authentic and well suited and definitely not cheesy. I recommend this edition because of the reader.
