Publisher's summary

This audiobook will document the rise to power of the most notorious cult leader of all time. Jim Jones was directly responsible for the deaths of over 900 of his followers. Many of them children. The story of the Jonestown is one of betrayed hope. Jones offered poor and needed people a promised land and in return for giving him their resources and trust, he took their lives.

The the tragedy of Jonestown is more than just a story about the evil acts committed by Jim Jones or the death of a congressman. To truly understand what happened there we must try to understand the very nature of cult life. From the brainwashing involved to the emotional, physical, and sexual abuse that is everyday life for those involved in most cults.

Well Told

Everyone would like to think they would not have become a victim to Jim Jones, but the scary thing about predators is that they know exactly how to choose their victims, and that every man has his price. Read this book and pray you don't become a target, and that if you do, the lessons you learned from this book will clue you in before it's too late to get away.

Very Well Done

This book is fantastic. It provides a lot of information from the very start to the very beginning and I've learned a lot about this piece of history and Jim Jones himself. If you're interested in learning more about Peoples' Temple, I would highly recommend this.

I Liked It

Highly recommended. It is sad that so many good lives were wasted and that so many people were brainwashed into believing Jim Jones crazy ideas as truth and ridiculous actions and socialism beliefs as an acceptable way of thinking.

I'm Surprised

Excellent history of what went on by Jim Jones. I’m surprised at how gullible some politicians were, local and national and how the government didn’t take much action even when the signs were there.

Very Informative

For me, this was a fascinating, fast paced book. It was so interesting to take a look at Jim Jones' life. I thought I knew everything about this cult, but after listening to this audiobook, I now have more knowledge than before. Definitely a must have book if you're interested in cults and Jim Jones.

Very Appealing

felt that the author took incredible pains to bring this story to his readers and it felt very well-rounded to me. It was the kind of story that is so crazy it had to be true. Excellent book and it would have to go on my top books list, alongside And the Band Played On...

Terrifying

Generally I found Jim Jones to be a disturbing and manipulative sociopath and continually asked myself how he could have been stopped sooner from destroying the lives of the people around him. The author does a great job of fitting the Peoples Temple movement into its context in recent American history and he knows his subject exceedingly well.

Disturbing But Interesting

It's a disturbing account of the madness and charisma of Jim Jones. The detail the author went into to portray every emotion of not only Jim but his nearest and dearest and of the populace of jonestown , was exquisite. This book did a wonderful job and had me in tears at times.
