Publisher's summary

As a champion for nonprofit leaders hell-bent on maximizing the impact of the nonprofit sector, Joan produced this second edition of Joan Garry's Guide to Nonprofit Leadership during COVID lockdown. She knew that board and staff leaders would need a guide come January 2021 to navigate a world where old rules no longer apply and a world that needs them now more than ever.

A very different time demanded a very different book. Certainly not different in style, Joan's new book is funny, inspiring, and filled with practical advice. Her voice is accessible, and you'll feel you are getting a pep talk from your biggest fan.

Drawing on her own experiences as a nonprofit ED, a board leader, a volunteer, and a donor, Joan shares her stories and introduces you to a host of new characters she has met since 2017. Board and staff leaders will see themselves in these folks - recognizing the mistakes and celebrating the successes.

In this new book, Joan will help you realize that "nonprofits are messy" - too many cooks, too few resources, and an abundance of passion - and tells you the way to find joy and privilege in that "mess".

The universe sent me Joan!

I was just hired to be an executive director after taking a 15 year break from my previous np life… thank god I discovered Joan from her podcast, got her book and now feel so empowered and ready to take this on with uber confidence! I’ve already assigned the book and several chapters as must reads for my board. :)
Thank you Joan for such devotion to the *main thing* so we can keep our eyes on our main thing!

Enlightening view on Nonprofits

Practical, straightforward, with a dash of humor. As a new director in a chaotic nonprofit, I appreciate the words of wisdom. I have so much to learn, and Joan is now a part of my learning library.

This Could Save a Board or Make a New One Really

Any Board can benefit from Joan Garry's wisdom and deep knowledge of how things work. She has a wide berth of knowledge and experience at each aspect of the Board and fundraising game. I can follow this playbook word for word to form and strengthen my new group. Thank you.

Excellent Resource

I discovered this book after listening to a few of Joan’s podcasts and I found it to be an excellent resource. My journey to a nonprofit E.D. role was from the for profit world, so it was a big adjustment. It was nice to discover that some of the things that I was experiencing were not all that unusual in the nonprofit world.

I also picked up some good solid ideas and suggestions that I could put to use right away. Professional development is something that I’ve always believed in, and when it comes out of your own pocket you might be slightly more selective in your choices. This book was money well spent. Thanks Joan for all the time, effort and energy that you continue to invest in making the world a better place! 🥰

WONDERFUL AND INSTRUCTIVE

I loved it! I will use this book as one of my non-profit bibles. I'm just trying to make this 15 words. I think that "requirement" is ridiculous.

Great stories and strategies!

I would have liked to hear more insight on how to lead effort as a board member on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in nonprofit organizations. Boards don’t always know how to effectively engage with staff and stakeholders, so more direct ways would help with that. It would’ve also been more helpful to hear about how to bring in an interim to help lead, in the event that you cannot hire a permanent ED or CEO for a period of time. Otherwise, the book was very helpful and insightful
