Percival Everett's The Trees is a must-listen that opens with a series of brutal murders in the rural town of Money, Mississippi. The murders present a puzzle, for at each crime scene there is a second dead body: that of a man who resembles Emmett Till.

Story
Leading a small army of slaves, Nat Turner was a man born with a mission: to set the captives free. When words failed, he ignited an uprising that left over 50 whites dead. In the predawn hours of August 22, 1831, Nat Turner stormed into history with a Bible in one hand, brandishing a sword in the other. His rebellion shined a spotlight on slavery and the state of Virginia and divided a nation's trust. Turner himself became a lightning rod for abolitionists like Harriet Beecher Stowe and a terror and secret shame for slave owners.

Slow but surprising
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Sure
Has John Crow’s Devil turned you off from other books in this genre?
No it hasn't.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Robin Miles?
Sure
Could you see John Crow’s Devil being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Not at all.
Any additional comments?
Slow start. The characters were typical but well rounded. I found myself become very irritated with the blind faith of these characters which means the author did a great job of forming them and exposing their flaws. The ending was not expected. I loved the setting and the cultural beliefs of the characters. They reminded me of several family members! Overall, pretty good read.

Entertaining
Loved the story and the familiar cultural references. The author did a fantastic job of bringing each character to life. He left no holes or gaps in the story. Can't wait to read other works.
I love Robin Miles, the narrator, but her accent missed the mark on this one. The listen would have been 10x better had been narrated by a native Jamaican.

Amazing
It's not often I'm riveted, but this one demanded it. The audio book is exceptional. This book reminds me of Alfredo Vea, and pulls in magical realism in beautiful ways. A haunting book about trauma and religion.

Great book about the complexities of religion and spirituality
Personally love Marlon James’s books because of the realism when he talks about spirtualism and juju. This was an interesting read that I’m surprised I liked only because I thought it started off a little funny but of course character development is on point and narration is *chefs kiss* Robin Miles alwayssss gets the job done!

Amazing reading of this unique story
I always love listening to James’s books. This one was no different. The story itself is very interesting and there’s a lot to unpack. Rural VS urban. Educated VS “backwards”. Good VS evil. God VS devil. And sex throughout. This is worth listening to but hard to hear about the child abuse.

Horrible!!+
The story was hard to get through to made only worse by the most inauthentic, under-researched and down right offensive 'imitation' of Jamaican accent. Horrible!
