About this listen
In prose of almost biblical gravity, and with a deep knowledge of the ways in which history shapes human lives, and sometimes warps them beyond repair, Foote gives us an ambitious, troubling work of fiction that builds on the traditions of William Faulkner and Flannery O'Connor but that is resolutely unique.

Story
A stark tale of a crime of passion, Follow Me Down tells the story of Luther Eustis, a respectably religious Mississippi farmer, who runs off to a deserted island with a young girl and brutally kills her after a three-week idyll. Why? And what was there about Eustis that attracted the young girl in the first place? The explanation of Eustis' motives is tangled and far from obvious, and each narrator perceives and reveals only parts and facets of the truth.

Writing at the height of her narrative and imaginative gifts, Sue Monk Kidd presents a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world - and it is now the newest Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 selection. Hetty “Handful” Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke’s daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.

Story
Moonglow unfolds as the deathbed confession, made to his grandson, of a man the narrator refers to only as "my grandfather". It is a tale of madness, of war and adventure, of sex and desire and ordinary love, of existential doubt and model rocketry, of the shining aspirations and demonic underpinnings of American technological accomplishment at midcentury, and, above all, of the destructive impact - and the creative power - of the keeping of secrets and the telling of lies.

Critic reviews
"Exquisite narration.... [Tom Parker] becomes the voices of the South and provides a strong accompaniment to Foote's fine prose." (AudioFile)
"Mr. Foote's writing is marvelously exact and positive. His attitude toward his people is respectful and human, as though he had thought about them a great deal and knew too much about them to take them for granted." (The New Yorker)

In Paradise - her first novel since she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature - Toni Morrison gives us a bravura performance. As the book begins deep in Oklahoma early one morning in 1976, nine men from Ruby (pop. 360), in defense of "the one all-black town worth the pain", assault the nearby Convent and the women in it. From the town's ancestral origins in 1890 to the fateful day of the assault, Paradise tells the story of a people ever mindful of the relationship between their spectacular history and a void.

Story
Claude Wheeler resembles the youngest son of an American fairy tale. His fortune is ready-made for him, but he refuses to settle for it. Alienated from his crass father and pious mother, all but rejected by a wife who reserves her ardor for missionary work, and dissatisfied with farming, Claude is an idealist without an ideal to cling to. It is only when his country enters the First World War that Claude finds what he has been searching for all his life.

Story
Allan Gurganus's Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All became an instant classic upon its publication. Critics and fans alike fell in love with the voice of 99-year-old Confederate widow Lucy Marsden, one of the most entertaining and loquacious heroines in American literature. Lucy married at the turn of the 20th century, when she was 15 and her husband was 50. If Colonel William Marsden was a veteran of the "War for Southern Independence", Lucy became a "veteran of the veteran" with a unique perspective on Southern history and Southern manhood.

Story
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

A story of Mississippi and family
Shelby Foote's dramatic telling of the story of life in Jordan County, Mississippi for a family from 1797 until 1953 is dramatic and inspiring. Full of character that leave you shaking your head. The performance of the narrator leads you into the mind of the author in this 1954 classic. I loved it Excellent

Excellent
This is the first book I have read by Shelby Foote. I have been immersed in great books by black authors writing on slavery and beyond, so I wanted to balance that with another viewpoint, to round out my understanding. I was riveted by each story, and one in particular had me in tears. The writing was absolutely amazing. Through sadness and a sense of futility, the collection also flowed with great hope and beauty. A deep reflection on the human condition. I will now eagerly read everything I can get my hands on by this author. As for the narrator, it is indeed the excellent Grover Gardner under another name. Why, I don't know, but he is unmistakable. This audiobook deserves high praise.

Great listen
This is a very interesting book that has the historical feel, but is in reality fiction. The narrator is great, but I do not understand why he is called Tom Parker here, but as he reads many other books he goes by Grover Gardner. (He is a great narrator, but his voice is unmistakable!)

Southern Literature at its finest
Eclipsed by the massive a justly praised epic "Civil War" narrative, is this lesser known but equally impressive collection of short stories.
I knew Foote was a Literary man, but I had no idea how incredibly talented and compelling he was. His name should be listed among the great 20th century Southern writers. Compelling and well worth your time. If you like Faulkner, O'Conner, McCarthy, Chappell, and others greats of the 20th century Southern literary tradition, do yourself a favour and get to know Foote outside the confines of the "Civil War."

Interesting story
I had a hard time keeping up with what was going on. The story was disjointed and I found myself getting lost when it would all of a sudden move to a new group of people.
