When the Moody family drops anchor on “Artichoke” Island, they are greeted by the mysterious Cap’n Weevil, a one-eyed buccaneer with a scraggly beard and a treasure map. Before you can say “Davy Jones’s Locker,” Stink and Judy are racing in search of gold. But they’re not the only salty dogs lookin’ for loot. Can Scurvy Stink and Mad Molly beat out their rivals? Not unless they can find the hidden clues, crack the secret codes, and solve the tricky puzzles - before time runs out! Aaarrr!

But this is not going to be boring vacation for Sink and Judy. There is a scavenger hunt and the children are thrilled. Each child who chooses to participate, is given piece of eight and a clue to find the next piece of eight. They bounce all over the island solving clues, and moving to the next one. Judy and Stink face stiff competition to be the first to find the clues, and they have to decide how to deal with that too. They also had to negotiate how to begin their searches. In this book the Moodys are a good team.
The clues are fun for the listener to solve too. The youngest child listening to this Judy Moody story was bit frustrated because she couldn't solve the clues before Judy and Stink. We had to explain, that since we were not on the island, we couldn't solve the mysteries. But it would be fun to hear the story, and it was.
The children in the car listening to this story were 11, 9, and 6. I am sure the older children would not have enjoyed just reading the book. But Barbara Rosenblat's voice was so cheerful and her characters so defined that we all enjoyed the book. In fact we listened to it again on the way home. OK. the oldest grumbled a bit, but it was just a token protest and everyone was quiet and listened. They just chat over things they don't care about, if I don't insist we be polite. So this is a good book.
