About this listen

There is a magical land just beyond our imaginations called Jirvania, where stories grow. Muse faeries harvest these 'pearls' and bring them to our world.

In the heart of Jirvania stands The Great Library, home of every book ever written, and a portal to other times and places where one can step into stories and experience them firsthand. Homework has never been such fun.

When young Jack Lemoine finds an opal dragon egg in Mystic, Connecticut, he soon discovers the real world is not what he thought. Dragons, unicorns, and faeries do exist. Unfortunately, so do witches, ogres, and other monsters, and they want Jack dead - yesterday. A prophecy is written in the stars that he will one day save Jirvania, but evil forces find a way to disrupt time itself, and Jirvania is annihilated seven years before Jack comes of age.

Imagination ceases to exist. Libraries crumble, art disappears, and theme parks vanish. Music dies. Our lives become empty and meaningless.

Imprisoned on Muse Mountain, Jirvania's lone survivor, Karel, receives a visitor from the stars above, urging him to change the story.

Meanwhile, back in Mystic, Jack and his friend, Mia, are thrown into a fantastical adventure when Julu, the opal dragon, hatches to protect them, taking them back in time to fix what once went wrong. The children soon learn that family, friendship, and love are the threads that bind us together, no matter who or what we are, and hope is found in the most unexpected places.

Now Jack must figure out how to help Karel change the story and save our imaginations before it's too late.

A Fun Fantasy for Kids of all ages

This was a really fun one, however it is a rather complicated story as it bounces back and forth between different time periods. It is definitely a book that you can listen to 2 and 3 times and pick up more information on the story. I thought the narrator did a wonderful job with the acting, voices and emotion throughout the story. She was definitely a joy to listen to. I would recommend this to older Elementary and Middle School age kids as it is a more complex storyline and I think younger kids would have a hard time following it. Overall it was a great first book in a series and I am looking forward to the next one coming out.

magical

Julu is magical and enchanting. readers of all ages will adore this novel. Trigger warning: there is a small bit of animal abuse and cruelty to be aware of. Also, julu is not a large part of the book, so the title is misleading. other than that, this is an amazing book and would recommend.

A magical quest to save imagination...

It's a magical tale... That's the best review I can give the book. It has its flaws, no doubt, but it catches your mind and heart and doesn't let go. It's a long listen - but I finished it in two days, just couldn't stop listening. "Just ten more minutes, just one more chapter," I said to myself. Isn't that the best of recommendations?

The plot is quite complicated, with all the time jumps that at first may confuse you when you listen. I also thought it strange sometimes that the kids didn't recognize a person or a place although they had already been told that part of their story by Julu. But it really doesn't matter overall because the book is so engaging, emotional, suspenceful and intriguing that you dismiss all those small inadequacies as negligible.

All the characters in the book have their moments, their five minutes of fame, which is an achievement as there are really so many of them, and all of them equally important for the plot. I found Goran's story (I hope that's how you spell his name) the most moving, and I just hope in the next part he'll find some kind of redemption...

As for the narration, Ms Meisberger is perfect as usual. I really like the way she's reading the book - without hurrying up, but with perfectly conveyed emotions of all the characters. Her interpretation just adds even more magic to the already magical tale.

Can You Imagine a World Without Imagination?

I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Without imagination we wouldn't have this book for sure, or any other book for that matter. A world without any art form, no music, no paintings, no poetry... Could you live in that world? neither could I or, for that matter, the characters of this story that will battle through time, space and worlds in order to keep imagination thriving and triumph over the heartless monsters that want it dead.
I wouldn't call this story a fairytale. It is a little too complex for a child and maybe even a little scary, but it is an excellent book for young teens. It is a very long journey into fantastical realms with characters that jump from one reality to the next to achieve their goals and chase away the malefic forces. It is hard at times to follow their jumps from one reality to the next, especially if your attention is not completely committed. It is a fantastical journey with many interesting characters and the happy ending we all love. Great interpretation by the narrator.
