About this listen
King Solomon had all the fame and fortune that any man could want. He was the world's wisest and wealthiest king. And yet, tragically, he threw it all away for the love of money, the pleasures of sex, and the powers of an earthly kingdom.
In studying the life of Solomon, we see both the true greatness and the tragic failure of our own humanity - from godly devotion to self-serving excess. Even in the midst of our best intentions, we are all prone to succumb to the same temptations of money, sex, and power. And if Solomon's incredible wisdom could not prevent him from such tragic mistakes, then how are we to triumph over the same temptations?
Philip Graham Ryken tells us how, by the grace of God, to prevent those downfalls and to seek God's glory amid earthly temptations through this rich, Christ-centered study of the life of Solomon.

Story
Langston Hughes, born in 1902, came of age early in the 1920s. In The Big Sea he recounts those memorable years in the two great playgrounds of the decade - Harlem and Paris. In Paris he was a cook and waiter in nightclubs. He knew the musicians and dancers, the drunks and dope fiends. In Harlem he was a rising young poet - at the center of the "Harlem Renaissance." Arnold Rampersad writes in his incisive new introduction to The Big Sea, an American classic: "This is American writing at its best...."

Story
As the Davidic psalms take us inside the heart of David, so do Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs take us inside the heart of Solomon. In 1 Kings 4: 32 we read that Solomon “spoke three thousand proverbs.” In the book of Proverbs we have 375 of them. In the classical genre of “advice to a son” literature, Proverbs offers sound advice for a young person going out into the world for the first time.

In his introduction to The Life of Abraham Lincoln, Henry Ketcham notes that there has been so much written about Lincoln that the legend has begun to obscure, if not to efface, the man. “In this biography the single purpose has been to present the living man with such distinctness of outline that the reader may have a sort of feeling of being acquainted with him.”

Story
Grace is more story than doctrine. It's more than forgiveness or compassion. It's undeserved by definition, essential to salvation. And it turns out that God's grace—though it's the only thing we stand on and the only thing we should stand for—is the very thing that we consistently distort and hesitate to extend to others. Why is that? To understand the story of grace—what it means and how it's misunderstood, why we need it and how it was given to us—we have to begin at the beginning.

Good historical data, but—
The purpose of this book is religious teaching, not historical information. The author spends 2/3s of his time explaining how the highs and lows of Solomon’s life and actions apply to the reader’s life as a Christian. In fact much of the discourse in this book refers to Christ’s life rather than focusing strictly on Solomon. I was hoping to get more of a history book than religious teachings. I could have easily finished this book if there had been a little less proselytizing. I would have preferred more historical discussion of what life was like under Solomon’s rule and less preaching. I am returning the book because of this.

Timely & Incisive
Before listening to this book, I only knew of him as the son of fames scholar Leland and the current president of Wheaton College (a Solomon figure in his own right within the Evangelical community).
However, I think he hits the nail on the head, especially for young, rich, and educated Christians facing all the attendant temptations of 21st century America. Will we follow Jesus to the end, or get seduced by money, sex, and power?

Questioable interpretations
I was so looking forward to learning about the life of King Solomon and how he ruled with his magical powers. To my disappointment, I found writer's personal opinions with irrelevant comparisons of prophets and scriptures from the history. Complete waste of time and money.

Unsatisfactory
I expected this to be a biographical history of King Solomon. It was evangelical biblical preaching recitation. If you like that type of literature then you may enjoy this book. I have but limited time on this earth and shall devote that time to other titles in the audible library. I do not provide a 1 star rating lightly in any category, this title was unsatisfactory overall, in performance, and in story.
