Ruka, called a demon at birth, is a genius. Born malformed and ugly into the snow-covered wasteland of the Ascom, he was spared from death by his mother's love. Now he is an outcast, consumed with hate for those who've wronged him. But to take his vengeance, he must first survive. Across a vast sea in the white-sand island paradise of Sri Kon, Kale is fourth and youngest son of the Sorcerer King. As the first prince ever forced to serve with low-born marines, Kale must prove himself and become a man, or else lose all chance of a worthy future, and any hope to win the love of his life.

Story
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Erik's surviving enemies send a ship to Wessex, where the Christian King Athelstan is raising Hakon. Unable to avoid his fate, he returns to the Viking North to face his brother and claim his birthright, only to discover that victory will demand sacrifices beyond his wildest nightmares.

Lindisfarne, AD 793. There had been portents - famine, whirlwinds, lightning from clear skies, serpents seen flying through the air. But when the raiders came, no one was prepared. They came from the North, their dragon-prowed longships gliding out of the dawn mist as they descended on the kingdom's most sacred site. It is 8th June AD 793, and with the pillage of the monastery on Lindisfarne, the Viking Age has begun. While his fellow monks flee before the Norse onslaught, one young novice stands his ground.

Underrated
So far this series has become one of my favorites of all time and this was only book two. Cannot recommend this more. And as far as Audio Books go the narrator here is amazing. All around just really, really good. I had no intentions to binge a trilogy when I started book one and here I am about to start book 3.

Finally! We all win.
I've been hoping Nell pulls the trigger on this book for ages. I've read the trilogy. Lister is a top 5 performer. What can I say? Merry Christmas, I guess.
I don't bother with reviewing the story line. You don't read reviews for whether the main character follows some moral imperative or compromises this or that phony philosophy. You come here to read whether this is worth your money or not. Whether it is challenging and entertaining. It is. Thank you again writer and performer.

The exact opposite of the proverbial "Second Book"
Wow, this book was nuts. I compared the two main characters of this trilogy to two other popular characters: Kaladin Stormblessed (Kale) and Logen Ninefingers (Ruka). Book 1 was mostly Kaladin, with some Logen sprinkled throughout. This book was mostly Logen, and because of that, I started to really dislike Kale/Kaladin because I started to REALLY like Ruka/Logen. However, whenever the story went back to Kale, I remembered that I really like him....
This bizarre conflict of emotions was attributed to just how real these characters feel, and was only one positive thing about this book.
The two main systems that gets fleshed out in this book are also insanely cool. Love to see it. Can't wait to dive into book 3!

A great story! Yes - Read It!
Nell can write a great story - with engaging characters - that make you crazy!
It grabs you, pulls you in and then takes you for a twisty intelligent ride. Makes you root for the antihero and the hero - only to make you question "Why". The twists and turns that makes you create any excuse just to listen for "10 more minutes". If you read the first book - then this one is a no brainer. It's even better!
Some the best authors are self published! They know the value of their ideas, their skills and figure a way to allow the economics to work for them so they can write full time. Not sure why there still are publishers, especially with todays technology - other than they're riding past expensive "business lunch relationships", to add fictitious layers of unnecessary costs and weasel their way into an unnecessary gatekeeper position.
I wish Audibles would embrace this better model, help authors thru production and help them aggressively market - before a competitive site that "get's it" blossoms and I have to split my time between two different audible book sites.

Dark, Unique, and Epic
I started reading the first book about a year ago, bit didn't finish it. Recently I decided to come back to it, and I'm glad I did. This story gets better as it goes, building, evolving, and surprising you along the way. I think Richard Nell has a bright future in this Genre, and I am really looking forward to his next project. Hopefully, whatever it is, Ralph Lister does the narration on it too, because he is truly a master.

Fantastic.
Only a select few books have ever made me really feel a need to listen to them at every waking free moment like Kings of Ash.
