Après tant d'années dans la rue, il en est venu à considérer la prison locale comme étant un refuge. Il met donc en place une série de tactiques dans le but de se faire arrêter et incarcérer.
L'écrivain américain O. Henry (1862-1910), de son vrai nom William Sydney Porter, est l'un des maîtres de la nouvelle. Il travailla comme journaliste au Houston Post et fit partie des écrivains les mieux payés aux États-Unis. Parmi ses recueils les plus connus on peut nommer New York Tic Tac et Les Quatre Millions.
