L'écrivain américain O. Henry (1862-1910), de son vrai nom William Sydney Porter, est l'un des maîtres de la nouvelle. Il travailla comme journaliste au Houston Post et fit partie des écrivains les mieux payés aux États-Unis. Parmi ses recueils les plus connus on peut nommer New York Tic Tac et Les Quatre Millions.
