19 aprile 1943. Albert Hofmann, chimico in forze all'azienda farmaceutica Sandoz di Basilea, inforca la bicicletta e si avvia verso casa. Sembra un giorno come un altro, se non fosse che ha appena assunto 250 microgrammi di dietilammide-25 dell'acido lisergico, un composto da lui stesso sintetizzato nella ricerca di uno stimolante della circolazione sanguigna. Ciò che accade durante il tragitto sconvolge la sua nozione del reale: visioni coloratissime, meravigliose e mostruose, percezioni di realtà parallele, terrori, euforie. È nato l'Lsd. Hofmann coglie subito le potenzialità della sostanza, in grado di squassare l'assetto delle sinapsi e portare a una "Ego dissolution", una tabula rasa dell'io che potrebbe sciogliere traumi, depressioni, emicranie, dipendenze. Per vent'anni sperimenta e contribuisce a diffondere l'Lsd nel chiuso dei circoli scientifici ma anche fuori, nel mondo che sta lentamente uscendo dall'incubo nero della guerra e che si interessa alle possibilità di questo colorato universo lisergico: non solo Aldous Huxley e le sue "Porte della percezione", ma persino Cary Grant sponsorizza l'Lsd come panacea della stressante vita moderna. Forse inevitabilmente, l'Lsd guadagna popolarità e si trasforma. Anche a causa di strani scienziati-sciamani come Timothy Leary, da farmaco diventa droga simbolo della controcultura, icona della "Summer of Love" e ponte verso la trascendenza orientale, tra l'India dei Beatles e la follia psichedelica di Syd Barrett. E così nel 1971 addirittura l'Onu ne mette al bando la sperimentazione e l'uso, relegandolo nel limbo delle sostanze proibite. Ma non sarà la fine: sfruttando tutti i possibili cavilli legali, alcuni ricercatori sparsi per il globo continuano sotterraneamente a lavorarci, mentre le energie creative dell'Lsd influenzano Steve Jobs e gli altri moghul della Silicon Valley.
