Publisher's summary

When Aurelie Harcourt's father dies in debtor's prison, he leaves her just two things: his wealthy family, whom she has never met, and his famous pen name, Nathaniel Droll. Her new family greets her with apathy and even resentment. Only the quiet houseguest, Silas Rotherham, welcomes her company.

When Aurelie decides to complete her father's unfinished serial novel, writing the family into the story as unflattering characters, she must keep her identity as Nathaniel Droll hidden while searching for the truth about her mother's disappearance - and perhaps even her father's death.

Author Joanna Davidson Politano's stunning debut set in Victorian England will delight listeners with its highly original plot, lush setting, vibrant characters, and reluctant romance.

Love this book!!

I truly enjoyed listening to this book! It made me aware of the debtors jail, which I had no idea something like that existed! She was a remarkable woman to have lived her life there with her father and still have such a beautiful soul!! Love this story!!!!

Excellent on all levels

I almost never take the time to write a review, however, as a Christian I am glad to finally read a book that has a great storyline encompassing mystery, intrigue and romance without vulgar language or descriptive sexual behavior. Also most importantly, rightly state scripture from the Bible. I look forward to more of this author’s work.

Clean and fun!

Clean and fun romantic drama. Thankfully no sex scenes. Just an interesting storyline and one of my favorite narrators!

Why did god wait until the book to fix stuff?

At the beginning, the book seemed normal, but about halfway through it became unbearably gody. There was one chapter that every other sentence the heroine was asking god for something. I don't mind a bit of god in my fiction, but this was too much. I slogged through it to get to the finish just to hear the ending and was disappointed with the blah ending.

Long and drawn out but, story is good!

The first 20 chapters felt like juggling the same information just in different contexts. I had a hard time following I admit but the storyline does get better! The narration by Justine Eyre was fantastic and is the only reason I got through this book. I will be asking for a return on this one....

Engaging.

I thought the story was engaging. I was interested I. the characters. I felt like there were some parts of the story that were a little jumbled and difficult to follow.

More religious than expected

The story was fine overall and intriguing, but the author kept inserting what felt like forced scenes around the main character’s religion and relationship with god. It didn’t add to the story at all and often made me grimace as it wasn’t a particularly accurate historical perspective of Christianity.

mixed feelings

The story starts out intriguing. It draws you with well developed characters, and perhaps a bit of a gothic feel. Then - around chapter 20? - our heroine begins constantly praying, and trying to envoke God's will. wait what? It takes a highly religious view! It then becomes a Christian romance, complete with a God who answers every prayer (sometimes quite literally. speaking to her) like a kindly grandpa. I finished it because I did want to know "who, what, how" but found the religion element an eye roller.
