Publisher's summary

If it’s not weddings, then hapless widows are expected to attend christenings … Lady Violet returns with St. Sevier to her family seat, and finds Derwent Hall at sixes and sevens upon the occasion of her nephew’s christening. Other guests have brought their children along to celebrate the occasion, and Sebastian MacHeath is on hand to serve as godfather.

Nobody seems to be getting along, despite the happy nature of the gathering. Summer heat builds to an unbearable crescendo as clandestine affairs, marital troubles, and family tensions escalate. Then somebody starts kidnapping little girls, and Lady Violet must figure out who, why, and how the kidnapper can be foiled.

It wrecked me

I ugly cried through the whole last chapter. It’s exhausting, but that’s one way to judge a good book. Burrows had truly made me care about the characters if certain events wrecked me. And I still have hopes and regrets about those characters. Speaking of which we see a bit more into the brothers in this volume, and I mostly like what I see. I still love how Burrows includes animals and children in her stories offering a different sort of romance. An old mare and a marmalade cat feature prominently in this book, but that’s not all. Lady Violet needs a dog.

A bit sad

Even though I didn't want Violet with Hugh I didn't expect that. Hugh doesn't deserve that wife.

Love Lady Violet

I like the character of Lady Violet, a smart woman who speaks her mind. I hate that she goes through heartache, and I want to see how she forges forward.

Excellent

Always love a Lady Violet story. But there’s something unrevealed here - anxious for the next installment.

Not a typical romance!

Even Grace Burrowes's one-novel romances have interesting, likeable characters with complexity in their emotions. This series-long arch of a romance, with its mysteries, is full of rich characters and evolving family relationships. Lovely. I f you like this novel, read the Lord Julian series, as well!
