On War was first published in 1832, at a time when muskets and cavalry were a dominating presence on the battlefield. Yet in the 21st century it remains a much-read and studied treatise on the subject – perhaps the most important European classic of its kind – and this despite the author’s demise before he could finish what was an extended review of the whole subject of military strategy. Why is that?

Grammar! For many of us, the word triggers memories of finger-wagging schoolteachers, and of wrestling with the ambiguous and complicated rules of using formal language. But what is grammar? In fact, it's the integral basis of how we speak and write. As such, a refined awareness of grammar opens a world of possibilities for both your pleasure in the English language and your skill in using it, in both speech and the written word.

Story
A survey of the quirks and quandaries of the English language, focusing on our strange and wonderful grammar. Why do we say "I am reading a catalog" instead of "I read a catalog"? Why do we say "do" at all? Is the way we speak a reflection of our cultural values? Delving into these provocative topics and more, Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue distills hundreds of years of fascinating lore into one lively history.

Story
There are so many Latin phrases in everyday use that often we use them without understanding the background and context within which they were actually used. 'Carpe diem'; 'Stet'; 'Memento mori'; 'Et tu Brute' – examples would fill a book. And often these phrases are also used in English translation: 'The die is cast'; 'crossing the Rubicon'; 'Rome was not built in a day'.

Not in-depth, but a decent supplement
The book consists of many translations of common words and phrases in Latin. There is no in-depth study, but it's a useful, and sometimes fun, supplement to learning Latin.

for a crash course, this was a good little book.
For a crash course, this was a good little tool.
I was in hopes it would be a little bit longer. maybe the price should be $2 instead of 4.90 something. I do like the way they gave you the text to go with it and they pronounce the words very well and audible.

Where is the booklet?
The product description said that the audiobook download would be accompanied by a copy of the written reference material. Language 30 CDs are always accompanied by a booklet containing the phrases in writing. But my Audible app has only the audio files.

Very good inexpensive practical lessons packed into this program. I had some difficulty accurately hearing some pronunciation. It would rate five stars if there was written text available.
