Il commissario Soneri è in ferie a Montelupo, un paese dell'Appennino che ruota intorno al salumificio della famiglia Rodolfi. Il patriarca è l'anziano Palmiro, cinico e rozzo ma abile negli affari, mentre il figlio si è voluto staccare dalla terra per dedicarsi alla finanza e all'imprenditoria.

Da un giorno all'altro il clan viene travolto da uno scandalo finanziario che coinvolge l'intera comunità e Palmiro, misteriosamente scomparso, ricompare nella notte per poi impiccarsi il mattino seguente.
