Publisher's summary

Learning to Fly is a glorious story about a man and woman who correspond after he places an ad for a mail order bride in the newspaper, and she responds. He feels in his heart that she is the one he will marry and start his family with, but as the train arrives in his small California town, he searches and searches for the woman he's grown to love. Finally, the postmaster points her out and the rancher realizes that he may have made a very big mistake.

What a powerful story!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

One of my most favorite scenes in this story was the description of Marlene reading the newspaper. Even though this is such an ordinary thing to do, the way Mr. Smith read how Marlene prepared her coffee or tea and absorbed every word of her newspaper, made me feel 'extremely' comforted.

Any additional comments?

This story was a real eye-opener for me, as I recognized myself in wanting to be independent and never having to rely on anyone for anything, but on the other hand, we all need help in our lives--not only from each other, but definitely from God. Without Him, we can do nothing. And He is always there whenever we call on Him.
