About this listen

Grief has settled in at Hart House. For nine months, Alfie has been caring for his twin seven-year-old daughters after the sudden death of their mother, Pippa. One night, Alfie wakes to find Sylvie and Cassia at the foot of his bed, claiming there’s a man in their room. Alfie finds no sign of a man, but it isn’t long before the girls start talking about an imaginary friend. What seemingly begins as a harmless coping mechanism for the two grieving girls quickly develops into something more insidious..

Alfie calls upon Julia—Pippa’s twin and a psychiatrist—to oust the malignant tenant from their lives, but he doesn’t want to leave. As his malevolent grip on the girls tightens—with increasingly dark and violent consequences—Alfie and Julia must contend with their own unspoken sense of loss, the haunting past of the house itself, and the true character of the force that has poisoned the girls’ minds.

Intriguing elements

Story had some intriguing ideas but for me it fell through. I kept waiting for the details to come out, for the secrets to be revealed about the MIL, the church, the history of the house but it all stayed rather vague. I can’t say that I regret the purchase because there’s so much potential but I can’t say it knocked my socks off either.

Meh

Meh! Was disappointed. Too much to sort through. Left me feeling like I wasted all my time listening, with no real outcome....

Narration was kind of weird

The male narrator sounded like a computer-generated voice at many times. It was very distracting.

When the only thing I listen to is horror, making it to my faves is a big deal

This will be a pretty short, but sweet review… As my title states, I really only listen to horror audiobooks, so to get a review is a big deal for me. But to get put on my favorites list, is an even bigger deal for me. I feel like I was pretty ruined to any author of horror, as my first taste of horror came from voraciously, reading my moms hand me down Stephen king and koontz books as a 10/11 year old. I loved the way these authors could allow me to immerse myself into their books through excellent character development, and even better storytelling. Throw in their ability to tell a tale that would not only
Keep me reading through the night because I simply couldn’t put it down,..or turn off the lights when I finally did put it down for fear of the words I’d read!

About one out of 18 audiobooks that I have listened to in the past several years has been a five star for me - this is one! All of the qualities that made King, well, the King of Horror, are found in this excellent book. Fans of King and Koontz, buy this book now..you won’t be disappointed!
