Madeleine Becker's parents died when she was 10 years old. Ripped from her home and everything that she has ever loved, she is forced to start all over again. The only way for her to move on is to build walls around her heart and keep everyone at a safe distance. Her logic: She can't get hurt if she doesn't fall in love.
That theory is blown to pieces when she meets Reid Connely during her freshman year at college. He is gorgeous and darkly mysterious. He understands Maddy's pain all too well, but sharing his pain would mean breaking down the walls he put up around his own heart. Conflicted between loving Maddy and hiding his dark past, Reid starts to reevaluate his world. Maddy's inner strength, snarky personality, and breathtaking beauty help Reid to make peace with his past.

Also, Maddy's obsession with Reid's purported cheating I just did not get. I understand he was a player prior to Maddy, but a player does not equate cheater in my book. Just because he liked no strings sex, doesn't mean he lies about it. Actually, everyone makes it clear in the book that he never lies about being a "ladies man".
I, also, understand that losing a lot of people in her life makes Maddy wary of relationships and loving another, but I do not understand the leap to the person I will love will hurt/cheat on me. Or, why she would insist that Reid forgive his mother when he (from Let Love In's storyline) has great reason to never speak to her again. Her reasoning that she lost her mother (who was a kind, loving, person) means that Reid has to forgive his mother (who was a selfish, uncaring b*tch) doesn't make sense.
And, finally, I know that I am way more liberal than the majority but to have a Dr. tell a single, 18 year old girl that she has to love and keep her "baby" when she is a few weeks along made me so angry. I would hope that, heaven forbid, my daughter was ever in that situation, educated people that are in a position to advise her would let her know that she has her whole life in front of her and that having a child at 18 may not be the best choice for her future. Even if they don't mention/bring up the right to choose with her, they could at least mention adoption. To say that a "baby" will be with you forever now and that Maddy should be happy reeks of judgmental attitudes that earlier in the book Reid's character stated was the reason his brother took the actions he did.
Couldn't stand Maddy
