Publisher's summary

Cultural and familial fireworks flare when the headstrong teenage daughter of a wealthy New Yorker falls passionately in love with a young man from New Orleans, and from a very different background indeed. What makes this story sizzle and soar are its time and place - the United States during the Civil War and Victorian England - and a couple of key facts about the protagonists. Miss Arabella Leeds is presumably destined to be a proper young gentlewoman, a model WASP before the term was coined. Aubrey Paxton, on the other hand, is the pampered "high yellow" house servant of a wealthy slaveholder.

In the capable hands and fanciful imagination of their creator, these improbable lovers defy convention in a setting where convention - or, at least, its semblance - is all.

A romantic adventure rich in historical detail and filled with vivacity and humor, Letters from an Age of Reason is a beautifully crafted tour-de-force of exceptional depth, passion, and power that introduces an extraordinary new writer.

Enjoyable picture into the past

I really enjoyed this book. At first I thought it a little sad, but things started to go better for our star crossed lovers. I preferred the narration of the male to the female, but the way they were melded together was very nice and somewhat unique. I cared for both characters. Very satisfying.

Superb Novel!

The story is well developed as are the characters. The pace of the book is excellent for a book of "letters" or "journal passages". Everything comes together smoothly, like a cool, refreshing breeze. The novel has wonderful descriptions in first person that add to the character development rather than distract. I thought it would have more on the Civil War but found I appreciated this view as it gave to the emotions of the book better. The narration too is well done, accents and character change is imaginative and add to the story composition. I hope for a sequel or prequel. Highly recommend and I listen to a lot of audiobooks.

Letters from an Age of Reason

WONDERFUL!! WONDERFUL!!! I hesitated in making this purchase and I am so glad that I went through with it. Ms. Hague has an amazing gift for writing in different voices. This is a very gifted author. Oprah Winfrey needs to read this...it would be on her Book club list. Don't hesitate, it will be worth your time and money.
