About this listen

Read by the author with an audiobook-exclusive conversation between Granger and his wife, Amber!

New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Publishers Weekly, ECPA Bestseller

'Country music artist Smith debuts with a sensitive and moving recollection of his path through grief. . .In stark, intimate prose, the author candidly renders the realities of suffering while articulating a moving message of renewal. Those seeking a faith-based path through grief will find this instructive and affecting.' -- Publishers Weekly

Like a River, a triumphant story of new life birthed out of tragedy, will teach readers how to face their failures, confront their pain, and connect with God—the true source of life.

On June 4th, 2019, country music singer Granger Smith was enjoying a final evening with his kids before heading to Nashville for the CMT Music Awards and his next tour. While helping his daughter London with her gymnastics, his youngest son fell into their pool. Granger did everything he could to get to him, but he was too late. River drowned, and Granger's world shattered.

The days, weeks, and months that followed River's death sent Granger on a dark and painful journey. Every time he closed his eyes, he replayed the horrific event in his mind, and every time he opened his computer, he was bombarded by the critique and criticism of people who blamed him for the accident.

Despite his best effort to get back on stage with a smile and song, it was all a façade. On the inside he was dying. Fortunately, that's not how his story ended. And now he is compelled to help people all around the world find strength, peace, and hope on the other side of tragedy.

  • Like a River, life is full of twists and turns.
  • Like a River, people pollute our world with their critique and criticism.
  • Like a River, tragic events keep us dammed up.
  • But like a river, we can find the courage to keep moving downstream.

Rivers don't run on their own strength; they flow from their source. When we try to keep going on our own, we won't make it, but when we connect to the greater source, we will find the strength and the faith to keep living after loss. This triumphant story of new life birthed out of death will inspire every reader to live Like a River.

Beautifully written

I couldn’t put this audible down and absolutely loved that Granger was the narrator. His writing is so beautiful about his heart wrenching ordeal of losing a child, regaining strength and the bond that he and his wife and kids have. I cried a few times listening to this and will likely listen to it again. Definitely a must read for anyone

Raw and Real Grieving with God

I absolutely loved this! I didn't know anything about this singer but I've suffered the loss of a child. Granger narrating his own book on this, for me, held my attention so much I felt that he was giving a faithful message. After finishing, I felt encouraged. I felt justified in the turmoil I'd gone through. One of the many many highlights, it did bring attention to my knee jerk thoughtlessness when I used to respond with condemnation on social media and in person. We learn ALOT about ourselves when we suffer and grieve with God. - Tonya Andersen

Just love this..

I started the audiobook and went out for a walk.. 8 miles later, I came back home still listening and just finished the whole book straight thru without stopping. Amazing listen about overcoming the unimaginable and God doing what He does and hearts opening .. I’m looking forward to Amber’s version as well. The journey of life is so much like a river.. highly recommend

YOU & EVERYONE YOU KNOW NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK

I’m not a huge reader but I listened to the audio and read the book in one day. This book is a must read for anyone and everyone who’s grieving, struggling, or hurting, knows someone who is, or may be in the future (this applies to you) and needs some hope and help to move forward. I can’t recommend this book enough. This is the book that I’ll have extra copies of so I can give them to people.

Wonderful!! ❤️

The book was just Amazing and I loved everything about it!!
And to be honest I probably wouldn’t ever have listened to it! But my son who is 22 wanted me to look for this book when I went to my favorite shop because they carry Christian books but they didn’t have it. So I got on Amazon and found it and brought it for him for Christmas, but he might get it now 😉 I had see where I could get it on Audible which I have a account and had some credits so I’m like I’m gonna get it an listen to it and I’m so glad I did because it’s such a humble book! And I loved your wife joined you at the end to tell us some back stories 🥰 and I hope she comes out with her own version.
My son had told me about Granger and that he was quitting touring and going into ministry back in early in the year and he wanted to go to one of your last concerts. So he talked his cousin into it and they drove over to champagne Ill. to see you from Ind.
