1192 A.D. - Sir Roane Garr is a member of St. John the Baptist Hospitaller sect and while visiting the supposed Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, he is hit by a freak bolt of lightning and suddenly finds himself with miraculous healing powers. The Hospitallers believe he is a heretic and must be destroyed, so he flees back to England and into seclusion as a bounty is put on his head.
Enter Lady Alisanne de Soulant, a young lady who is losing her sight. Forced by bounty hunters hired by the Hospitallers to lure Roane out of hiding, she finds herself torn between saving Roane's life and the life of her father, whom the bounty hunters hold hostage in order to insure her cooperation. After she helps the bounty hunters capture Roane, guilt and a growing attraction prompt her to help him escape their clutches, only to find herself captured and punished. Those who seek to collect a price on Roane's head realize he is in love with the woman they used as bait and they use her once more to lure him back out of hiding. Now, stakes of the game have grown in a brutal tit-for-tat game. When Roane is recaptured trying to aid Alisanne, it becomes up to Alisanne, her father, and a rag-tag band of heroes to save Roane from the Hospitallers and certain death.
Never has there been a more pathetic, yet courageous, group of misfits as they strive to save the powerful and pious knight once called the Lord of Light.

Kinda of a dumb love story

I listened in puzzlement to the end, expecting some plot twist to justify the Hugo Award. Instead I found it to be an utterly boring pointless bore throughout, before finally realizing I had the wrong book.
Warning: Not the one written by Zelazny

Not Roger Zelazny.

My problem with the reviews is that I read them to gain insight into books I have an interest in. I look for reviewers to be honest and concerning the 'actual" book you are posting about. It can be a good or a bad review as long as it's an honest review. All of these gave me the impression that they didn't like the story because it was NOT the one by Mr. Zelazny. If that's the case, why post that under Ms. Le Veque's page?
I purchased the book because I happen to have a great interest in the knights of this time. I think Ms. Le Veque writes some of the more interesting stories of this period, and I enjoy them. Now for my honest opinion after listening.
Some books hit me just right, others do not. This is one that was not on the excitement level I wanted concerning the time. I found it did not contain the amount of "supernatural" aspect I was hoping for, considering that Sir Garr was struck by lightning and given the gift of healing through touch. I was hoping to see more on the level of Godly intervention, and I wanted to see the power of that lightning strike do some miraculous things. Most of the story was about Sir Garr being beaten down, abused, and hunted by his fellow Hospitaller Knights because one claimed him to be a heretic or a witch. There was also a second antagonist who wanted the bounty (for his capture), and the lady (who came to be his love), for his own.
I never really saw him pull the power I have come to expect from a knight of his size and caliber. Yes, he's always trying, but there was just something missing. I also felt the love story was rushed, but it's a short book, and to be expected. I just wanted so much more. This one was not a favorite for me, but I'm glad I did not pass it up.
The performance is just fine, and I was not disappointed with the ending because we got the HEA we hoped for. The story was just okay for me because I wanted so much more action, but I'm glad I gave it a listen.
Have to say this rant!
