About this listen
Colin
Being rejected by family hurt like hell, but I kept my head high, left my toxic relatives behind, and moved across the country to Gaynor Beach CA. Luckily, I have great furry company. My bulldog puppy, Widget, was dumped on me for not meeting my parents' ridiculously high standards either, so we're comforting each other. With a nice rental house, and a new job, Widget and I were ready for a fresh start, until I got a devastating diagnosis. I can't take care of Widget properly while trying to save my own life, and I expect a long hard road. So I'll have to break both our hearts and put her up for adoption to someone who can, for her sake. Right?
James
I’ve wanted to get a pet forever, but my family circumstances didn’t allow it. Now I’m away from my masses of relatives, and on my own, I’m ready to take on a furry companion. My friend, a guy who never says no to an animal in need, introduces me to Colin and his beautiful puppy Widget. I’m horrified Colin feels he needs to give her up just because he's sick. I’m happy to take Widget as a temporary foster. I’m also happy to offer support to the new guy in town who is so very alone in a time of crisis. Helping someone in need comes naturally to me. But what if that temporary help turns into me wanting a forever relationship? This is a gay romance slow-burn novel about new beginnings, found family, unconditional love, and a puppy named Widget. This mid-angst story has a guaranteed happily ever after.

There’s no way in Helgar's Nebula I’m marrying the candidate my parents have chosen for me. I don’t want to be the house-husband of some stoic warrior who only cares about training all day. Boring! Thankfully, I’ve learned a thing or two from all those rom-com human movies I’ve illegally downloaded off the intergalactic web. No one will see it coming when I pull a runaway groom maneuver on them!

A really good start to a new series
I had initially read book 4 in error first, so I knew these two were going to be together and some of the hardships several couples went through. But I'm glad that I got to see exactly what they went through. I was sickened how Colin's family treated him & Widget. They just threw both of them away. Also, what Colin's doctor did was unforgiveable. He needed to lose his medical license. James is conflicted if he should adopt or foster an animal. His best friend runs a small rescue out of his home & is just overrun by animals. Colin comes to him with the idea of giving up Widget as he doesn't think he can take care of her as he is so sick. Arthur comes up with a different idea of introducing James to help him out. I loved watching these two slowly become friends and eventually falling in love. As I had mention in the 4th book, James' family is a bit overbearing, and they do have a tendency to run roughshod over everyone. I can't wait for the rest of the books to come out in audio as Michael Ferraiuolo did an awesome job bringing these MCs to life.

It was fine
The book was fine, and the couple was fine. There was just something missing in their relationship. With the time skips, it almost felt like instant love. Everything but the sex happened really fast with no real emotional explanation.
I'm going to read Danny and Rob's story next.
I received this book from GRR and this is my honest review.

Fur Babies
This is full of emotion and the characters were so interesting, the secondary characters are amazing, and we can not forget the fur babies and all their cuteness. Michael Ferrera did a good job bringing a character's life.

Another moving story by Gabbi Grey.
This book is part of a multi-authored series called Friends of Gaynor Beach Animal Rescue written by Gabbi Grey.
Another great narration by Michael Ferraiuolo. He always does a good job with the voices and brings the stories to life.
It was so much fun seeing the guys from Gaynor Beach again, I immediately smiled to myself when I heard a few of their names. I love how the author is able to keep the storyline/world going after several different books/series.
When I saw this title and the dog on the cover I figured it was a sweet little fun read about a dog rescue, I should have known that that wouldn't be the case. Gabbi always has a way of putting deeper subject matter into her books. I know, I know, I could have read the book blurb but I usually don't when I enjoy an author's stories I just picked them up.
Opposites attract, hurt/comfort, acts of selflessness, found family

Widget steals hearts
This was the first Gaynor Beach story of any kind I’ve read/listened to and while I think it could stand on its own, it probably would have been enhanced by being more familiar with the multi-author world. That said, it’s a nice story dealing with some heavy topics and offset by an adorable puppy. The romance between Colin and James was a little light and more on the slow burn side, especially with all Colin had to cope with. Widget was absolutely precious and stole the show, with second place going to James’s enormous, chaotic, loving family. Michael Ferraiuolo was a good choice to narrate here and does a fair job at using distinctive voices as well as emoting.

Great addition to the series
I always enjoy books by this author and this was no exception. James and Colin were a cute couple, and Widget the puppy was adorable. Having read most of the other books in this series, it was nice to see past main characters make appearances. This was a great addition to the Gaynor Beach series.

Good Narration
This is the first book in The Friends of Gaynor Beach Animal Rescue Series. I really wanted to like this book, but it just didn’t work for me. It was slow and needed more world building. For those looking for a slow and cozy book this might work for you. It had a good idea for the story but not much of a plot line. I may try again later to listen to this story, the narration was good, and it wasn’t a bad story.

Widget for the win 🐾
This was the best story I have ever heard!!! The storyline, the characters, even the inevitable scenes were absolutely perfection! I absolutely loved James’ character, even more so for Collin. Especially with ALL of James’ family, just what Colin needed in life, for Widget and in a partner. The instant acceptance and inclusion of Colin into their entire family was so heartwarming and proof that blood doesn’t always make families. And the medical aspect was a nice touch and definitely adds something extra to the experience. I cannot praise this story enough!
Michael Ferrauolo has an impressive voice for audiences. It’s soothing and refreshing, stern when needed and fun at just the right moments. The differentiation between the characters was okay, there were a few moments where he struggles but it was minute. Narrating numerous characters is always a challenge and Michael takes on the task with ease!

Realistic medical condition, slow burn, HEA
Back in one of my favorite cities, Gaynor Beach - which couldn’t be gayer- we finally (well me, this is a me issue) get the story of Colin and James. I’ve read these totally out of order but it was an absolute delight to go back and see how their relationship evolves. Colin is alone with his bulldog widget (I can’t even spell her pompous first name, but widget fits) with a critical medical issue (liver failure due to hep c) after having been ostracized from his family, and James is just there to help out. This is a - to some extent by necessity - a slow burn as these two really develop their relationship above all else. It’s almost like everyone else knows they’re in a relationship before they do. But Colin gets a family (and a liver) and these two get their HEA. For the record, five stars for the portrayal of the medical issue. Overall quite realistic so didn’t detract for me at all.
