Publisher's summary

A family tragedy thrusts Amanda into the foster care of the Henning family at the start of her senior year of high school. Amanda soon learns that the prestigious private school isn't what it seems. Monarch Preparatory School for Girls is a place plagued by rampant teen pregnancy, promiscuity, and violence.

Amanda is confused when Kat, who rules the school, befriends her. Perhaps more confusing, though, are her momentary lapses in memory, misplaced or moved objects, and instances of depravity taking place within the Henning household.

Unbeknownst to Amanda, Ceremonial Father conducts ritual sacrifice and blood orgies with a group of Satanists.

What is truly happening at Monarch Prep? Can Amanda make it to graduation? Most of all, what role will she play?

Critic reviews

"Lucifer's Children combines the teens in trouble of classic John Saul with the no-holds-barred visceral intensity of Edward Lee and Jack Ketchum. This is hardcore horror with a heart. You'll want to look away from this smashing, page-turner, but you simply won't be able to." (David Bell, author of Somebody I Used to Know)

A terrifying book you just can not put down.

This book was a horror filled, cult centered story revolving around characters, that as the author states, "Don't know they are in a cult." This extremely long audio book started off with a horrendous scene of infant murder all in the praise of Lucifer.
We are introduced to Amanda, a teen who is placed in a foster home after her parents are in a mysterious car crash and they are killed. Amanda is appalled at the sexual abuse and blatant disregard of laws and morals that her foster parents show for her young foster sister. She keeps her head down, waiting for he 18th birthday to move out. This reader prayed along with her that somehow she would make it through alive and would be able to get on with her life.
Questions arose while reading this story, what was Kat looking for in the office that day, were Amanda's parents really dead, why did Amanda seem to lose large chunks of her memories, and why did the book have to end the way it did? How could so many characters not do something to change the outcome of Amanda's story?
The story is written in such a way that even this extremely sensitive reader was able to keep hitting the play button just to see what would happen next. I am not a horror reader, and this books contents were sickening at times but I found I had to finish it.
Joe Hempel is an incredible narrator, his voice was perfect whether he was doing male or female characters, and his tone, pace, and speech were very well done considering this terrifying story line.
Would I listen to this story again, absolutely not. I lost a few nights of sleep being haunted by the images the author seared in my brain. I would definitely read other books by Brett Williams, only if they were not horror and more contemporary/comedy/suspense. Brett penned an incredible story, he must have one hell of a tortured mind to be able to come up with this story but I will never forgive him for how it ended.
So after 24 hours of consideration, this is my review of Lucifer's Children, that was gifted by the narrator for an honest review. I only chose to read this story because Joe was narrating, and he is my all time favorite audio book narrator. And, he thought I would enjoy the experience. Jokes on me, right guys?

Graphic & Twisted

The label on the book that states may be offensive, definitely needs to be there. I had a difficult time listening to this book and unfortunately I was unable to finish it, I am sad to say. I can listen to a lot of horror books that are far from the norm and can be twisted but this was a bit too much for me, so unfortunately, I am providing a review on what I did listen to. From what I heard, it was very well written and graphic. The author makes it quite easy for you to picture in your minds' eye what is happening. I think that was the issue I had ... between my imagination and the authors' writing it was just a little too much for me. If you like graphic, twisted and deranged books ... this one is definitely for you.

From I heard from narration, Joe Hempel was amazing as he always is. He brings the story and characters for life for you and again, I think that was my problem.

Dark, Twisted with Great Narration

Would you listen to Lucifer's Children again? Why?

Although the book had objectionable elements, I did enjoy Joe's Narration. The book was easy to follow, and had it's share of horror.

Have you listened to any of Joe Hempel’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Joe did a great job as always. He made the characters come to life, with such ease and precision.

Any additional comments?

This is DARK. Not for everyone.

Warning, this book is like an accident where you know there will be horror, but you have to look at it anyway.

TWISTED AND DISTURBING

Where does Lucifer's Children rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom

Where do I begin.... I would like to start by saying, this book is absolutely NOT for everyone. I have an extremely high tolerance for disturbing and even I cringed. The story itself was good, I don't doubt that this kind of thing actually happens, however I'd like to live in denial and believe it doesn't. Though this story was just terrible, it was like looking at something disgusting and knowing you should turn away and not look but you can't help it, you have to look. That was this book...I had to keep listening, I had to get to the end I needed to know where this was going. When I got to the end, I was somewhat relieved that it was over and kind of surprised that I enjoyed this sick twisted story as much as I did. I'm almost embaresed about the fact that I listened to it in its entirety.

Joe Hempel is an amazing narrator, and the fact that he delivered such a great narration given the premise of this book is awesome in itself. True talent, right there...kudos Joe!

So do I recommend this book? well after I Started listening to it I ran over to my co worker and asked if she got this book too, and she had. I don't know if she'll be able to get through it, but she's kind of like me....I like to be shocked, and if u tell me not to watch this, listen to this, read this, do this.. it makes me even more curious. So I leave you with this:

This book is not for the sensitive reader....this is not about wonderland, its about a very, very sick group of individuals and the things they did were horrendous! But as a book should do, it entertained me...I won't say I recommend, I will say listen at your own risk.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

WOW..

What does Joe Hempel bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Animation, Joe is a one man show. He has an amazing ability to practically become each character. One of my favorite narrators, next to Jake Urry.

Not for General Audiences!

I hate to use twisted, as it seems overused in other reviews, but that is the perfect word to describe this book. It is dark, perverted and not for general audiences. I found the story interesting but the dialogue was cheesy at times. The narrator, Joe Hempel, did a wonderful job! His ability to create distinct voices for multiple female characters was impressive especially considering this is a female driven story.

Disturbing and Intriguing

Hands down - THE most f****d up book I've ever encountered. As many other reviewers have said - this is extremely graphic with intensely disturbing language and subject matter, so I would not recommend to just anyone. The very first scene should give anyone a good idea if they will be able to handle the rest of the book or not. Whether it was intentional or not, that was a great way to write the book since it will not be a good reading fit for everyone.

That said - I mostly enjoyed this. It was weird and disturbing, but I constantly wanted to know how and why everything was happening. The author did a great job with the pacing and building up the story.

For me, what fell a little short was what was left unexplained or unaddressed. There were at least 3 different things brought up that I thought would end up being either a part of the story as a whole, an explanation for something else, or at least wrapped up at the end, but they were unresolved. Because the author was so skillful in making me want to know more, and simultaneously wanting to know less, I was bummed that I had so many unanswered questions at the end.

Joe Hempel - he's always a great narrator, but did an exceptional job with this book both with the subject matter and with the many characters and all of their personality differences.

not a HEA story, ` thankfully

I am not to sure how to review this book. it was good, weird, and had a lot of taboos it, but it was very good. I was a little confused at some points though.. but not to bad, and if you listen a bit longer, the writer does explain things.

the first chapter jumps right into how this story will go. Its disturbing, I will warm you. but if you can get past the first chapter it will be a good book to listen to. You should have an open mind, and not be faint hearted. Remember when reading this book, its a story. its fiction. It was meant to entertain us. and it did. but it is totally twisted; and might make you want to go to church after you are finished with it :) it did me, and I haven't been to church in like 15 years.

The narrator did an excellent job. this is the second book I have heard him read, and he did a great on booth books.

Lucifer's Children

The warning on the front of this audio is minor compared to what you will listen to within these pages. I was torn between being horrified and intrigued. Horrified that groups like this actually exist and intrigued by the fact that I listened to the end.
I really wanted to give this a very low rating because of it's content, yet the writing is excellent, the flow of the story strong. The characters felt all to real. To bring all that together in a story most people would and will dislike to the extreme says a lot about the ability of the writer.
If you decide to give the audio a try you first have to know that there is child rape from beginning to end. And if you decide to continue to listen to the story do so on the ability of the author to bring it all together in an all to believable story. I listened to this in order to push my boundaries in audio. And I wasn't disappointed, it may have pushed to hard as I will have nightmares for weeks to come

The narrator does a fantastic job with this narration. He has a pleasant voice when needed and a horrifying one when needed. He will take you and drop you right smack dab in the middle of this horror story, and you won't be able to escape. The voices he used are compelling yet frightening. He brought the story to life.

I was given a copy of this audio by the author, narrator or publisher in exchange for an honest unbiased review
