About this listen

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Great Alone comes an incandescent story about the resilience of the human spirit, the triumph of hope, and the meaning of home.

In the rugged Pacific Northwest lies the Olympic National Forest - nearly a million acres of impenetrable darkness and impossible beauty. From deep within this old growth forest, a six-year-old girl appears. Speechless and alone, she offers no clue as to her identity, no hint of her past.

Having retreated to her western Washington hometown after a scandal left her career in ruins, child psychiatrist Dr. Julia Cates is determined to free the extraordinary little girl she calls Alice from a prison of unimaginable fear and isolation. To reach her, Julia must discover the truth about Alice’s past - although doing so requires help from Julia’s estranged sister, a local police officer. The shocking facts of Alice’s life test the limits of Julia’s faith and strength, even as she struggles to make a home for Alice - and for herself.

“One of [Kristin Hannah’s] most compelling and riveting novels.” - Booklist

The narrator ruined a decent story

The narrator was awful to the point of ruining the book. This was not Kristen Hannah's best work but it would have been enjoyable if the narrators performance didn't leave you thinking all the characters needed antidepressants.

So So

I liked the story line but sadly for me the voice was all wrong, it didn’t feel right. Not one of my favorite Kristin Hannah performances.

Magic Hour

I always enjoy read a Kristin Hannah book and this was no exception. The story was interesting regarding a young girl that is found in the woods and the bond of the sisters.

Great story old voice

I’m sorry Suzanne. You sound like an old lady like me! The main characters are 35 and 39 yet they sound like old ladies. All the characters sound old, men included. I apologize for being agist but if you are going to act out a book your voice should fit the part. I found this annoying and the sound effects , like a tinny voice on a phone, or Peanut’s booming voice, jarring and disruptive. The story was beautiful and beautifully written. I sobbed as I listened to the ending. With the exception of one evil doer there were helping, loving people everywhere.

Outstanding!!

This was such a touching and amazing story. I loved every second of it. The narrator was perfection and this book will live on in my heart forever. A must read!

I’m starting to love this author.

This is my third book by this author, and while this book may be my least favorite of them I still enjoyed it and stayed captivated. I loved the story. The narrator was distracting from the story at time. She acted out the dialogue as if every character speaks with several periods in their sentences. That began to drive me crazy after awhile but I still kept listening because the story was interesting enough.

Not great, I was disappointed

I loved the nightingale. And was looking forward to this one. I was disappointed. The story was predictable and characters seemed out of a Lifetime movie. I know others hated the narrator, but she didn’t bother me, it was just the story never really took off. I kept waiting for the story to evolve and suck me in, but it didn’t happen. I found myself looking to see how much longer until I finish it.

Good enough to keep me distracted doing housework

The story had enough twists and hooks to keep me listening while I was doing something else, but I was never gripped in the way I have been with other books.

The characters and gender roles seem dated. Maybe it's supposed to be emblematic of a fictional rural community on the WA coast, but it seemed more like a reflection of what a middle aged reader might want to believe about a fictional town on the coast.

And my own pet peeve, the descriptions of natural elements of the books, especially the birds, are inaccurate. I know it's fiction, but part of what makes fiction work is creating a world that could be real even if it isn't.
