Publisher's summary

It may be difficult to consider that something as ordinary as a daydream could lead to something serious like addiction. However, the powerful subconscious mind can often work against us. The pressures of reality can be overwhelming, and sometimes traumatic experiences anchor our emotions in the past. Negative situations, toxic people, and setbacks in life impact our mental health, emotional resilience, and overall wellness.

Maladaptive daydreaming, also known as excessive daydreaming, is a condition where people have intense, elaborate daydreams that can go on for extended periods of time. A maladaptive daydreamer can be so immersed in their imaginary world that it becomes extremely challenging for them to function in the real world. Their daydreaming might be so distracting that they stop engaging with the people around them and struggle to fulfill their responsibilities.

Escapism often manifests itself in these situations because it’s all about escaping reality. An addict may find life too stressful, uncomfortable, and barely manageable. They withdraw into an alternate world filled with bliss and oblivion.

As the author mentions: “So many of us constantly seek refuge in the safety of our daydreams while presenting another version of ourselves to the outside world. I always knew that I daydreamed incessantly. It wasn’t until I researched this book that I made the connection to maladaptive daydreaming and subsequently the realm of escapism. My goal is to bring more awareness to this often-neglected topic.”

You may feel that you no longer want to spend some of the best moments of your life in a fantasy. Maladaptive Daydreaming Is My Addiction will help you better understand excessive daydreaming and escapism, while providing tools to improve your quality of life. Your time is valuable and some of us have shorter attention spans than others. That’s why the content has been optimized to save you time while delivering the concise information you need. Title is misleading

This is not a memoir from a daydreamer. It sounds more like someone’s honors thesis in psychology. There were a lot of lists of ailments from the DSM and the same old pat advice to wake up and deal with your life and feelings. It’s not that it is bad advice, but it could have covered anything. This book is very general and not particularly sympathetic.
