Publisher's summary

Set in 1855, number-one best-selling, multiple award-winning Book Two of the Threads West, An American Saga series continues the tale of five richly textured, complex generations of unforgettable personalities of differing cultures. The secrets of the maps are revealed, and suspense builds as they push westward, hurtling toward unknown destinies, propelled by one adventure, danger, romantic twist, and encounter to the next.

Forged in the crucible of history, shaped on the anvil of a dangerous land, the threads of their lives and torrid loves interweave with the evolution of the West. Armed conflicts, the rancor of slavery, and the discovery of gold, all create lethal surprises when the characters are forced to defend their lands, their loved ones, and their honor. The tragic story of the Indians begins to unfold. New characters with dark hearts, lost souls, and hopeful innocence color the tapestry of this epic saga. Others, in search of place and rightful freedom, catapult into the story.

An unexpected convergence of events sets in motion the thrilling, yet heartrending conclusion of Book Two, setting the stage for the arduous crossing of the Continental Divide, and the passionate tumult of the next Maps of Fate era novel of the Threads West, An American Saga series: Uncompahgre.

You will recognize the characters who live in these words.

They are the ancestors of your friends, your neighbors, your co-workers, and your family.

They are you. They are us.

This is not only their story. It is our story.

Could have been an interesting book!

I love any of the wagon train books as long as the author did his research. I, of course do not know first hand, but have read many Native American bios and their way of life and mind set and this author is way off! That being said, the narrator made this a very boring book. He ran sentences together, spoke in a hum-drum voice and I couldn't tell which character was saying what, when!!!!

Love the storyline HATE the narration

I have this series in print and have met the author on several occasions and had wonderful visits about his series. I say this because having read them, I was able to put to my own interpretation into the characters and my own accents. And I loved the series. I loved the characters, except the one… you know who he is. However, this narrator is awful and takes away from the storyline with his monotone voice and horrible accents. I’m hoping that he isn’t the same one for all the books. Definitely recommend the book and the series, but be prepared for some gawd-awful monotone narration.

narrator below average

Is there anything you would change about this book?

It's way too long. It needs to be faster paced.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Haven't gotten to the end yet. Waiting for book 4 although there is no information about when book 4 might be released. I was astonished the author knocked off Hilda. She was one of the more interesting characters.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jack Bair?

I don't know all the narrators available but Mr. Blair needs help. He tends to read in a monotone. He also miss pronounces words. Perhaps his producers or editors need to listen more carefully and make him correct the miss pronunciations. When he tries to do a dialect, they all sound the same. Somewhere between Irish, Russian and "who knows."

Was Maps of Fate worth the listening time?

All the books are worth listening too but need to be shortened and streamlined.

Any additional comments?

I would like to hear book four, but there is no information on when it might be available.
