About this listen
This three-and-a-half-hour audiobook offers a faithful retelling of the Hofmann forgeries, and their impact on the progressive rewriting of Latter-Day Saint history. Why did new Mormon historians insist Hofmann’s forgeries were legitimate, even when investigators provided convincing evidence to them of the hoax? How did Bruce R. McConkie know Hofmann’s Joseph Smith III Blessing was a fake, despite authentication by document experts and pressure by historians calling him “incompetent” for questioning? Before detection, Mark Hofmann’s “discoveries” challenged the testimonies of many Latter-Day Saints as science and history seemed to attack the character and integrity of the Prophet Joseph Smith and the Church. Church leaders endured a great deal of criticism for their inability to detect the deception foisted on them by Hofmann. For progressives, the Hofmann story left behind a black hole and a black eye for the Church. For traditionalists, the Hofmann forgeries can represent a faith-promoting opportunity with diverse lessons for navigating future trials. This audiobook is an excerpt from the larger book, Faith Crisis, Volume 1: We Were Not Betrayed!.

Story
Though Joseph Smith's run for president is now best remembered for its gruesome end, the renegade campaign was revolutionary. Smith called for the total abolition of slavery, the closure of the country's penitentiaries, and the reestablishment of a national bank to stabilize the economy. But Smith's most important proposal was for an expansion of protections for religious minorities. At a time when the Bill of Rights did not apply to individual states, Smith sought to empower the federal government to protect minorities when states failed to do so.

Secularism is increasingly a fact of life in Western society. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that faith is harder than it has been before. Even in the past when organized religion enjoyed more widespread cultural acceptance, there were still obstacles to true belief. Today, the obstacles are different, but faith is still viable.

On account of the superficial points of agreement between Islam and Christianity, many don't see how tremendously deep the divides between them really are, and fewer still have considered the evidence for each faith. How is jihad different from the Crusades? Can we know the life of Jesus as well as the life of Muhammad? What reason is there to believe in one faith over the other, and what difference can the Gospel really make?

Between 50 and 90 CE, the various writings that comprise the New Testament were written, including the four Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, the Epistles of Paul, and other letters to more general communities of the early Church. But what is recognized as the 26 books of the New Testament today, in literally hundreds of English translations, actually took several more centuries to be determined as "canonical" by the Church.

Story
Since they were first discovered in the caves at Qumran, in 1947, the Dead Sea Scrolls have aroused more fascination - and more controversy - than perhaps any other archaeological find. They appear to have been hidden in the Judean desert by the Essenes, a Jewish sect that existed around the time of Jesus, and they continue to inspire veneration and conspiracy theories to this day. John Collins tells the story of the bitter conflicts that have swirled around the scrolls since their startling discovery, and sheds light on their true significance for Jewish and Christian history.

Story
The Septuagint, the name given to the translation of the Hebrew scriptures between the third century BC and the second century AD, played a central role in the Bible's history. Many of the Hebrew scriptures were still evolving when they were translated into Greek, and these Greek translations, along with several new Greek writings, became Holy Scripture in the early Church. Yet gradually the Septuagint lost its place at the heart of Western Christianity.

Story
The Council of Nicea was not clerics in a dark and ornate hall. It was brawls in churchyards; it was emperors and governors fighting to save the empire; it was political intrigue as the governments of church and state blended into a volatile stew. It was the way a fringe group of peace-loving communal worshipers of a crucified Palestinian prophet conquered the Roman Empire.

Story
There are many stories we can spin about previous ages, but which accounts get told? And by whom? Is there even such a thing as “objective” history? In this “witty, wise, and elegant” (The Spectator), book, Richard Cohen reveals how professional historians and other equally significant witnesses, such as the writers of the Bible, novelists, and political propagandists, influence what becomes the accepted record. Cohen argues, for example, that some historians are practitioners of “Bad History” and twist reality to glorify themselves or their country.

At the heart of the nation's spiritual history are audacious and often violent scenes. But the Puritans and the shining city on the hill give us just one way to understand the United States. Rather than recite American history from a Christian vantage point, Peter Manseau proves that what really happened is worth a close, fresh look.

A Spellbinding Account
Growing up in Pennsylvania I only heard the small bits and fragments that made the news back East about Mark Hofmann and his strange Salamander letter and blowing people up over it. I had no idea what really happened.
This short book excerpt blew me away going through a timeline of events, from Mark’s initial early desire to forever change the narrative about Joseph Smith, to the incredible uncovering and exposing Hofmann’s fraud by document experts in the FBI, to the position we find ourselves in now, not really knowing what “history” has become tainted by Hofmann’s forgeries.
This is such a crazy incredible story. I wish everyone understood this and would listen to this amazingly researched narrative. It could help people step back and stop worrying so much about weird historical narratives that were obviously tainted by fraudulent actors, and just focus on what we do have and know. I am so grateful to Hannah and James Stoddard for putting this together and presenting it so well. Well done!

Hannah reads very nice. Easy to listen to.
The statement of Gordon B Hinckley that we do not need present revelation seems opposed to early mormon views.

Fascinating and Faith Promoting!
I was SO pleased to have this book on audio, even in partial form. L. Hannah Stoddard’s reading brings the fascinating and tragic tale of Mark Hoffman to life, as well as the effect it had on the ‘new narrative’ pushed by progressive LDS church scholars.
I was a teenager when this all played out and missed so many details! Brilliantly researched and written. I look forward to the next reading.

every truth seeking church member should consider
Much controversy surrounds present day present day latter day Saint topics in new events. The church is being attacked from many vectors not only from without but from within. This book shows some of the ways we may be in danger from those within who have an agenda that they openly admit is to change the course of the church.
