Publisher's summary

Best-selling author Larry Crabb cuts to the heart of the biblical view of marriage: the "one-flesh" relationship. He argues convincingly that the deepest needs of human personality - security and significance - ultimately cannot be satisfied by a marriage partner. We need to turn to the Lord, rather than our spouse, to satisfy our needs. This frees both partners for "soul oneness", a commitment to minister to our spouse's needs rather than manipulating them to meet our own needs. With "soul oneness" comes renewed "body oneness", where couples enjoy sexual pleasure as an expression and outgrowth of a personal relationship.

The Marriage Builder also identifies three building blocks essential to constructing marriage: the grace of God, true marriage commitment, and acceptance of one's mate. Discussion questions are included to aid couples who want to dig into it and apply the principles to their own lives and marriages. The Marriage Builder is for anyone who longs to transform marriage from trial to triumph.

Tried and true

I have 27 books on my bookshelf on Christian marriage and relationships. This is the best, by far. The answers he offers are the only ones based totally on biblical references and principles. It changed everything I thought about marriage.

Back to the biblical world view of marriage

Dr. Crabb is spot on. If you're disappointed, change your expectations. We should transform our minds and give ourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. Our sinful, fallen minds really cause us to think illogical and ant-biblicale. This book proints us to the goal of ministry instead of selfishness. A life long goal to be holy because He is holy.

Best Christian marriage book by far.

As a Christian marriage counselor… this book gives you the perspective that other Christian marriage books fail to provide. Where others treat symptoms this one goes to the root of the issue. You’re not like Christ enough and your marriage is selfish. Ministry over manipulation. Let’s go!

Your completeness allows you to minister.

When you are complete in Christ, it frees up your mental and spiritual resources so that you can direct them more easily and with a certain amount of pleasure. The problem many spouses have (including myself,) is a commitment to manipulate my partner to extract completeness out of them, rather than relying on a sound relationship with God for my completeness, and using that completeness to minister to them.

Larry Crabb is a boss, as the kids would say. Here we have a psychotherapist who has thought for himself, searched these things out in prayer, and used the empirical method of examining his own patients to draw conclusions, rather than just taking as valid the most immediate general consensus.

The family is the beginning and end of life, it is of the utmost importance, and the family cannot get right until the marriages get right, so take a minute and buy this book. I highly recommend this book, and this author.

Quite good.

this book is an excellent resource for understanding the psychology of marriage and interpersonal relationships. It's a little bit clinical, but full of very valuable information.
