Publisher's summary

Acclaimed author of biographical and historical fiction Irving Stone turns his magnificent talent to telling America's most colorful and exciting story - the opening of the Far West.

Men to Match My Mountains is a true historical masterpiece, an unforgettable pageant of giants - men like John Sutter, whose dream of paradise was shattered by the California Gold Rush; Brigham Young and the Mormons, who tamed the desert with Bible texts; and the silver kings and the miners, who developed Nevada's Comstock Lode and settled the Rockies.

America called for greatness - and got it. There is nothing in history to match the stories of these men who braved wilderness to bring new nation to the shores of the Pacific.

Great history of the west.

Wonderful read. I learned a lot about the history, the characters and the politics of the Wild West. Highly recommended.

We stand on the shoulders of giants!

What a great story about the unfolding of the American West! I generally loved the book but found Irving Stone may have had a negative bias against the "Mormons" or "Church of the Latter-day Saints" as he calls the church.. The reason I say this is that I found the fact he never referenced the full name of the church which includes "Jesus Christ". Not once in hundreds of references - which is odd...
I think "westerners" as we call ourselves are generally ignorant about the history of western migration and how towns, cities as well as states came into being. This is a great historical walk for those interested in the history of western expansion and the development of some unique aspects of Western US culture - namely the willingness to take risks.

what a great history!

i really enjoyed this recounting of the history of the US movement west. The narrator has a pleasant voice and seems to have a love for the material. the history itself is very well done, taking huge subject and presenting it in an informative and interesting way.

Perfect for a road trip in the West

Nearly 23 hours long, this was the perfect audio book for my trip West through New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota. An excellent history on the opening of the West in American history.

Not a mesmerizing narrative BUT...

...rather an arresting collection of vignettes cataloguing the personalities and people who braved much, risked all and finally, matched the mountains that stood before them. Lots of inspiration and pride in this history...and from diverse, unexpected quarters...Mormans, women, Chinese, Irish, Unions etc.. . That said, Not too impressed with the somewhat dreary narration of Traber Burns...probably would have preferred Grover Gardner (a little inflection, Mr. Burns, PLEASE!) but happy to have been in the hands of an author clearly honored to relate the history of so many giants.

Worth the investment!

A wonderful book on the settling of the far west. I found it to be very engaging and I felt draw in to the story from the first few chapters. I very much appreciate the research that went into this book, and was surprised at how it even made me chuckle at times based on the amusing anecdotes and dialogue that were captured. It is an investment of time to read through 60 years of history, but even as someone who has been born and raised on the east coast, I found it well worth it.

I learned so much about this time in our countrys' history. It doesn't seem as far away when you hear the story unfold.

OK but too large of a subject for one book.

Lots of info that made the book more of a history sampeler then a good information source. At times I thought I was reading a history on Mormons in the west. It didnt seem balanced.
