About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Jodi Picoult has an incredible talent for taking hot-button social issues and weaving them into compelling page-turners. In Mercy, she explores the depths of love in its many forms. Police chief Cameron McDonald has lived in idyllic Wheelock, Massachusetts for most of his life, as has his beloved wife Allie. Their comfortable lives are thrown into tumult, however, when Cam's distant cousin Jamie arrives in town along with his wife's dead body. Jamie admits to the murder - a mercy killing to end the pain caused by a ravaging cancer. And now Cam is torn by his oath to uphold justice and his family obligations as chief of the Scottish McDonald clan. Meanwhile, another new arrival in town, Mia Townsend, threatens to unwittingly drive a dagger through Cam's marriage. Deftly portraying the complexities of love and passion, Picoult delivers another literary triumph with Mercy.©1996 Jodi Picoult (P)2006 Recorded Books,LLC Contemporary Contemporary Romance Mystery Romance Suspense Women's Fiction Marriage Fiction

Critic reviews

"What could have been a competent, topical novel about a mercy killing becomes, in Picoult's hands, an inspired meditation on love." ( Publishers Weekly)

Just not her same punch!

Of all I’ve read this one was very fair, average, but not up her normal quality in her story lines! Just felt like was about a everyday affair, readable but just not exciting as her others😬🫣

Makes you think how much should you have?

As always Jodi Piccout’s books they are real world issues. I love how she is not afraid to go there to bring justice, compassion & a get their head perspectives. Each character has a back story of their own. However, Mercy lacked a little intensity as her other books. Still a good story. I’m glad I listened to it.

Intriguing story & topic

Interesting book and as always a intriguing topic. The end was a little vague for the two main characters, and I wish there was more context there. Great story overall.

Predictable

The story was written to hold my interest but it was just so predictable. I thought the narration was pretty good. Usually the author’s (whom I adore!) plot lines keep me intrigued. It just didn’t hold my attention. On to my next Jodi Picoult novel!!!! I also agree that euthanasia should be considered an option if warranted.

Good Book

It really makes you think. I wasn't overly impressed with the affair and how he thought of his wife, but other than that the entire book was very well written.

I did like this one

So many of you didn’t like this and maybe that is because you have never had to grant Mercy to one you loved, or maybe you aren’t married to your greatest love who has cancer and is dying. I have both those conditions currently and I found this book both compelling and comforting even though it was written almost 30 years ago. Thank you once again, Jodi, for making us think about difficult social issues with a new mind❤️.

Not my favorite Jodi Picoult

I’ve read more than a dozen of Jodi’s books and have enjoyed most all of them. This book left me bored and disappointed

Good but….

I liked the basis of the story and the characters, but it was just a very long book that could be quite slow at times. I do love Picoult, however, so on to the next.
