Publisher's summary

How can a shattered ex-cop follow the rules when he's no longer sure of them?

For 16 years, Ben Shepard loyally served the Long Beach Police Department. Then he took a bullet to the head, and his life was shattered. No one expects much of anything from him anymore - except his father, an old man receding into a fog of his own. And except maybe his tenant, Grace, who's been a warm and friendly constant in his and his father's bleak lives.

Until the day she vanishes.

After an official investigation stalls, Ben moves forward on his own. But stepping into Grace's past - and all she was hiding - is a dangerous move for a man who can't trust his memories from one day to the next. The deeper he gets, the more he has to question whether he's being driven by the gut instincts of a suspicious former cop or by paranoia.

Recognizing what's real can save Grace's life. If only he can trust himself to do it....

Thanks Tyler Dilts for another great book.

I love police procedurals. But a "sweet" procedural? Who would have guessed? it was wonderful.

Touching, intriguing, and captivating

It was a slow start, but I realized that was part of the setup. The relationship between father and son is as wonderful as it is difficult. The story flows and develops beautifully as the mystery deepens.

A Deeply Moving Book With a Satisfying Mystery

Would you listen to Mercy Dogs again? Why?

Absolutely, in fact I have listened to several passages over again already

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The mystery is imbedded in the main story which is one of two damaged people who love each other very much and struggle to care for each other in spite of their challenges. Within this story is the disappearance of a person they both care for a great deal. This drives the story as the search becomes more complicated and dangerous.

What about Tyler Dilts’s performance did you like?

I have listened to all of Tyler Dilts' other books which he also narrates. While he is not my favorite narrator his voice and the emotions evoked by his voice are absolutely perfect for this book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wanted to but I also wanted to save it because I knew I would miss these people so much when the book ended. Ben and Peter became part of my life, I cared about them and wanted so much for things to finally go well for them.

Any additional comments?

I have enjoyed all of this author's books but this book has taken his writing and narration to a new and higher level. This is just such a very good book I cannot recommend it too highly. I was hooked from the prologue to the very end and I think you will be too.

An outstanding read on several levels.

I've read and enjoyed all of Tyler Dilts' books, starting out because he writes about Long Beach where I live & he teaches at my alma mater. That's enough for 1, maybe 2 books, but to spend the time reading 5 books requires that the writing style, characters & storylines have to be special/unique. When this latest book came out, I attended a signing at Book Carnival where Mr. Dilts talked about his career & about the very personal inspiration for this book, as well as his plans for future books. He also talked about his decision to narrate his own books - not always a good idea - but with his acting background & personal connection to the story, rest assured that you will enjoy his narration of this very emotional & interesting tale.

Tyler Dilts is evolving into a remarkable writer!

A thriller that shares with remarkable insight and compassion, from the perspective of, "damaged people." A work that is at first a bit disconcerting, because the main two characters are wounded, and surviving in a life far removed from their former normal lived. One by gunshot the other by dementia.

Ironically the book reveals insights into what it is like to survive trauma and loss, as well as the power of love, with characters who rise to a higher level of their humanity.

It's a well crafted story, and difficult to or down. Dilt's
best so far.
