Publisher's summary

A thriller book set in the small city of Millersville during the 1950s.

Tal Rose arrives in Millersville with a purpose: to recover a hidden sum of sixty thousand dollars that was buried by his fellow POW, Timmy Naylor, before his death. The search for the money leads Tal to cross paths with various townspeople, including George Naylor, Timmy's troubled brother, and Fitzmartin, another former POW who is now a dangerous and unpredictable man. The quest for the hidden money soon becomes entangled in a web of deceit, violence, and deep-seated personal conflicts. Tal's journey is not only about finding the money but also about finding a sense of purpose and healing from his traumatic past.

Tal Rose drives through a heavy April rain towards Millersville, reflecting on his troubled life post-military, where he learned about the hidden money from Timmy Naylor, his fellow POW who died in captivity. After settling in a motel, Tal starts his quest, meeting various people from Timmy’s past, including Timmy's now-disillusioned brother, George. Tal discovers Fitzmartin, another ex-POW from the same camp, is also in Millersville and suspects Fitzmartin of sinister motives. Fitzmartin reveals he’s similarly aware of the money.

Tal follows clues, learning unsettling secrets about the Naylor family and the fall of George’s business, worsened by infidelity and loss. Tal’s exploration leads him to Timmy’s former lover, Ruth Stamm, who helps piece together more parts of the puzzle despite her broken relationship with Timmy. When Ruth is kidnapped by the deranged Fitzmartin, Tal must confront him to rescue her. The search leads Tal and Antoinette, a woman entangled in the past events, to a hidden cave where they find the money. However, Fitzmartin tracks them down, leading to a brutal showdown. Fitzmartin kills Antoinette, but Tal fatally injures Fitzmartin with a desperate assault.

Ruth, recovering from the trauma inflicted by Fitzmartin, remains in the hospital while Tal confesses everything to the authorities. Despite their warnings, Tal remains, determined to stay with Ruth and rebuild their lives together. The town's chaos settles, with the hidden money returning to the Naylor estate while Tal and Ruth, bonded by shared pain, look towards the future.
