About this listen

Miss Marple: The Complete Story Collection gathers together in one magnificent volume all of Agatha Christie’s short stories featuring her beloved intrepid investigator, Miss Marple. It’s an unparalleled compendium of murder, mayhem, mystery, and detection that represents some of the finest short form fiction in the crime fiction field, and is an essential omnibus for Christie fans.

Described by her friend Dolly Bantry as “the typical old maid of fiction,” Miss Marple has lived almost her entire life in the sleepy hamlet of St. Mary Mead. Yet, by observing village life she has gained an unparalleled insight into human nature—and used it to devastating effect. As her friend Sir Henry Clithering, the ex-Commissioner of Scotland Yard, has been heard to say: “She’s just the finest detective God ever made”—and many Agatha Christie fans would agree.

Classic Miss Marple - uneven narration

I was happy to get this collection of stories, it even had one I hadn’t heard before in any other collection - Greenshaw’s Folly. But I was rather disappointed in Juliet Stevenson’s narration - which is usually so excellent - she made Miss Marple sound rather nasal and petulant in places. Reminded me of a Mary Austen or Mary Musgrove from other audio stories - disagreeable characters with the kind of voice I don’t associate with Jane Marple. Otherwise the voices were very good. No one writes anymore the way Agatha Christie did! Which is why I listen to her stories over and over.

Good voice

The voice actor makes all the difference. Unfortunately there are quite a few women whose voices are too high to do the male characters well. Juliet Stevenson does both well. This book was a great treat!

Deliciously wicked - what's not to love...?

Miss Marple has had a special place in my heart for decades. it was fun revisiting these wonderful short stories many of which have ties to the novels. It was Miss Marple who taught me that the world truly is a wicked place (seriously) but that shouldn't stop us from doing good and seeking justice. And we should find joy and fun along the way. Juliet Stevenson is a wonderful narrator. I found myself envisioning each scene. If you are already a lover of all things Christie, this is a must listen. If not, this is a delightful way to get to know her. Mind your step, don't slip in that blood there...
