When did our leaders become followers?

This is a time for responsibility. If you’re not going to finish this book, don’t start it.

The unique business problems we face today have rendered the old corporate playbook obsolete. Without it, executives scramble for guidance, only to discover everyone around them is just as lost.

JeVon’s people-first mindset guides his service as CEO of Scribe Media, a multimillion-dollar publishing company Entrepreneur magazine ranked America’s #1 Top Company Culture. The son of a Black pimp father and a White orphan mother on welfare, JeVon’s experiences demonstrate more than the old playbook’s issues—he’s living proof that we should throw it out.

In Modern Leader, JeVon opens a conversation to all leaders who want to be part of a new evolution in leadership. Business is about people, and true people-first leadership requires moving beyond the exclusionary framework of the past.

Don’t listen to this book unless you’re willing to evolve. This is a time for action. Don’t listen to this book if you’re not ready to take action.

If you’re looking for a playbook, you won’t find it here. This book isn’t a playbook. Because leadership isn’t a game.

Awesome book, message, a must read for leaders

Modern Leader has many great messages. Among the most important is people first! Leaders serve and support ALL people, and this book shows people how to think about that and do it. Leaders must welcome everyone and work to understand them, and if we do right, we get right. People are not assets, they are humans and it is our responsibility as leaders to unlock their potential. The message and challenge is clear. We must continuously think differently to improve as a leader and serve ALL people. Well done, Jevon.

I want to be a modern leader!

Thank you JeVon for inspiring me to inspire the kids I work with that are “from the hood”. I have a renewed vision for ways that our team can prepare and equip (but not “train”) our kids to navigate the realities and opportunities ahead of them.

Best leadership book in 10 years

I read a lot of books; over 60 in the last year. The Modern Leader if fresh citrus in an age of brown bananas. JeVon McCormick cuts to the quick with his leadership insights and life experiences in this easy to listen to masterpiece.

I’m an Axiologist and a Behavioral Analyst. I’ve been working with people for over 30 years and I could not have written a book this good or insightful. In a world where leadership talk is everywhere on social media, this book is a velvet slap in the face for everyone who talks but doesn’t walk.

I can’t recommend this book enough. Truth be told, I keep rewinding it. JeVon is a living example who puts any reasonable argument against “making it” in the work world to bed for good. Listening to his stories I keep asking myself, “what the fuck is my excuse?”

Modern Leadership proves one thing; if you aren’t where you want to be in your life, it’s because you just aren’t trying.

Modern Leader

JeVon McCormick is a Modern Leader. He does a fantastic job calling out the “old playbook” and the problems that come with using it.

He shows that there is a different way, a better way to do things. What if we looked at people for who they are and not what their resume said or what connections they had? What if business put people first, instead of profits? What if we just did the right thing?

And Dion Graham does an impeccable job lending his voice to this story. His voice pulls you in and he makes sure the words really sink in. He sounds professional and also engaging.

Bravo

As I listen to this audio not once but 4 times. I was enlighten about what I heard and intrigued more as becoming a Great "Modern Leader". I don't want to be a continue broken play book. Every leader of a company, organization, and etc. should read or hear this book.

Could Not Relate

This book doesn't have much actionable advice. After literally hundreds of times of the author referencing that "he did it on his own, without help, and against all the people trying to keep him down", I just got disengaged. I get it, he did amazing things. And his argument is that others should do amazing things and that judging people by there skin color is bad. Yeah well duh.

He argues that people are the greatest resource and should be the focal point of the company. Yeah I agree with that too. And that's great and all but I couldn't figure out what, if any, concrete recommendations he made in how to make people the focal point. The book was mostly fluff.

The audio execution was excellent, and the interviews were a nice add in throughout the text.
