Publisher's summary

Louis L’Amour takes William Tell Sackett on a treacherous passage from the Arizona goldfields to the booming town of Los Angeles.

Tell Sackett was no ladies’ man, but he could spot trouble easily enough. And Dorinda Robiseau was the kind of trouble he wanted to avoid at any time - even more so when he had 30 pounds of gold in his saddlebags and a long way to travel. But when she begged him for safe passage to Los Angeles, Sackett reluctantly agreed. Now he’s on a perilous journey through the most brutal desert on the continent, traveling with a companion he doesn’t trust...and headed for a confrontation with a deadly gunman who also bears the name of Sackett.

Early Western survival and honor, hard lessons

Classic Louis L'Amour imagination and discriptive writing about the trials and tribulations of a tough and determined mountain man and his struggles against nature, the Mojave Desert, and outlaws. I personally appreciated reference to familiar desert challenges, mountain ranges, and numerous towns described as viewed by horseback in the 1800's. Good reading but also very entertaining in audio version.

Oh! The Suspense!

Captivating to the very end. The reader knows how to fluctuate his voice for the different characters in the story, and his delivery is a masterpiece.

The only bad thing about this book is that it didn't last forever. I really enjoyed it.

pauses between chapters

there are quite a few times that the story is mis-edited where a chapter will end and there will be a pause with time left and no reading that just needs cut out. made me pull my book back up to see if it somehow got paused or if the app froze but it was just blank spots in the reading
