About this listen

Declan

It’s really hard to pretend like life is normal when you’re staring a monster in the eyes, though he’s both tempting and irritating in his human form. I put my days as a hunter behind me, unable to cope with the death and pain anymore, to become an upstanding citizen and for what? To assist Lake, a man who claims he’s not a monster but keeps talking about me like I’m edible and–even worse–wants to woo me? Between my old organization trying to pull me in and Lake proving that things aren’t quite what they seem, I’m dragged back into this world of fighting the things that humans fear the most.

Lake

The human is exquisite. The first moment he told me he was going to hunt me down, I felt my heart burst. He’s beautiful, sassy, angry, and going to be mine (even if he thinks he can refuse my charms). But what Declan doesn’t know about me is that there’s a reason I’m hiding as a human among monster hunters. And while he definitely doesn’t know why, he’s willing to work with me because the people around us strangely want Declan and me dead at the end of this (I mean, who would want to kill us? We’re amazing).

But honestly…what’s more fun than dragging a hunter off to the dark side?

Warning: This is a chaotic monster and a chaotic human. Stuff happens. People die (but they were bad, so it doesn’t matter, right?) and there’s plenty of humor alongside a budding romance.

I have been struggling to find a good book to listen to and I got so excited when I saw Alice Winters had a new audible! and with Michael Ferraiuolo who is one of the three best narrators. This was great and unique and so flipping hilarious!

Enjoyed It a Lot

This book was so much fun to listen to. The story has a Hunter who is brave and clever, Monster who is funny and little bit scary at times, romance, plus lots of dangerous adventures, twists and interesting supporting cast of characters. Narrator did a great job with story and the voices, his work made this a perfect listening experience. Can't wait for the next book.

So fun!

This book was right up my alley! A little sexy and very sweet. The romance builds with funny bits in between. A believable world where inter species love can thrive. :)

I love it

I love the other books that she's written. I love the witty humor and snarky attitudes. I really do love the narrator who does the books. I need more.

Monster indeed...

Usually, I listen to Michael Ferraiuolo reading to me an Alice Winters book immediately and love every minute of it. For this one, I listened for three hours, set it aside, and forgot to go back to it.

This is a beyond slow burn, slow burn. I'm glad I came back to it as once I hit 60% the story picked up and got better.

Anyways, in this new series we have Lake (Leland) a true monster who hates being one and Declan (Jackson) who was a hunter who killed monsters but retired to teach kids

I just finished rereading the first assassin's book so when I was reading this one, the characters really stood out.

The world was unique but I would have loved to know more about it. Monsters that attack and kill humans and humans getting used to these attacks is very interesting.

These two don't actually hook up until near the end but I loved the humor between them.

But the true star of the book was Sir Reginald. Please let me find out that it's not just a beta fish.

.

Unusual type of monster, a dynamic I liked, and some turns I didn’t really expect.

Crazy new world...

This book started off extremely well for me. I liked being introduced to this new world and to two new main characters in Declan and Lake. The story begins with the wonderful (and hilarious) narration from Michael Ferraiuolo and he does a fantastic job right from the very beginning.

In the appropriate Winters manner, there is the level of snark that we have come to expect in her writing. Unfortunately, this book seemed to tip over that line from being funny, to becoming TOO much. It was non-stop and way too OTT.

Lake (or should I say Leland?) plays the OTT character and I'm not really sure when we as the readers are supposed to know when Declan decided to actually come on board regarding Lake. Lake is SO crazy with his actions towards Declan that you really don't feel like there is a developing relationship - more like he finally just gives in and says, "okay". That's not really fun....

But, I have come to know that craziness is the name of the game with Ms. Winters and I willingly stepped forward to jump on board. So, that's on me.

All in all, it still made me chuckle and that made it worth it. This is a new and interesting world and I am anxious to see where it goes from here.

Fantastic

I like a book that can grip you right off the start. And this book did that for me as well as making me laugh when I'm not on the edge of my seat.
