Publisher's summary

Would you entrust the most important thing in your life to a person ordered to hate you?

Poland, 1938. Despite threats of alienation from his Christian family, Johann, a decorated army officer, falls deeply in love with Rachel, a Jewish medical student. When they settle into their new countryside home, their marriage is happy and blissful…and short-lived.

After the Nazi invasion of Poland, Johann goes missing. Without a family to rely on and antisemitic sentiments growing all over the country, Rachel and her newborn daughter Ilona are thrown into the Warsaw ghetto.

Faced with their new reality, Rachel knows the only way to save her daughter is to smuggle her to her Christian sister-in-law, Irena, outside the ghetto. Irena is willing to risk her life just to save a single Jewish baby—but will her courage be enough?

My Daughter’s Keeper is the extraordinary tale based on the true story of two incredible women, brought together by love and faith in the face of war, persecution, and hatred.

The history

I was interested about the survival of those people. I’m always looking for good novels that include polish people and their lives.

Emotional Read

Very good book. It was happy, it was sad, I found it very emotional. The characters were very real. It’s worthwhile.

excellent storyline but rough translation and very long book.

I love historical fiction especially when it comes to World War II. the Jewish people were treated abominably!! so many courageous people and heroes during this time in history in spite of the Nazis cruelty and inhumane treatment of the Jewish people and anyone who helped them. once I figured out that this book was translated from the original language it was written in, it helped me endure through the story because I really wanted to know how the book ended. I did not like how the main characters, the women, were made to look so gullible, especially Irena. (sp?) She was described as simple minded by repeating the same phrases at times, saying silly thingsthat wete inevitable and unrealistic. I think, in reality, they were very courageous, strong, and intelligent. it was Lost in Translation and the narrator did not help either.

Overall I liked the storyline

Overall I liked the storyline. I do not believe all religions worship the same God, that’s a newer philosophy. Sometimes the main character can be extremely naive which was the case but there are plenty of naive people in the world, so have to take it at face value. Times were very difficult and people had to do what they had to do. The story rounded out without loose ends.

The story line was great

The narration was not good. I thought the narrator sounded like she was using a baby voice at times.

Poor narration

The narrator repeated herself several times... maybe an error in production? And I got the sense that portions of the book were left out.

Very enjoyable

Story and reader were great. The story was very sad in parts but I didn’t want it to end.
