About this listen

A deeply moving and painfully honest memoir from the trailblazing World Cup-winning, Olympic gold medalist, and US Women’s soccer goalie Briana Scurry

Briana Scurry was a pioneer on the US Women’s National Team. She won gold in Atlanta in 1996, the first time women’s soccer was ever played in the Olympics. She was a key part of the fabled “99ers”, making an epic save in the decisive penalty-kick shootout in the final. Scurry captured her second Olympic gold in 2004, cementing her status as one of the premier players in the world. She was the only Black player on the team, and she was also the first player to be openly gay. It was a singularly amazing ride, one that Scurry handled with her trademark generosity and class—qualities that made her one of the most popular players ever to wear a US jersey.

But Scurry’s storybook career ended in 2010 when a knee to the head left her with severe head trauma. She was labeled “temporarily totally disabled”, and the reality was even worse. She spiraled into depression, debt, and endured such pain that she closed out her closest friends and soccer soulmates. She pawned her gold medals. She walked to the edge of a waterfall and contemplated suicide. It seemed like the only way out until Scurry made her greatest save of all.

A memoir of startling candor, My Greatest Save is a story of triumph, tragedy, and redemption from a woman who has broken through barriers her entire life.

A true Olympian

I have been a Bri fan since I was a kid. She was MY player. Every time I watched her play I’d try to remember her techniques, poise and tactics so I could mimic them in my own games. (that PK two step was a real game changer for me)

I actually met Bri when I was 10-11 years old and I remember being so intimidated by her quiet strength but also so curious to know more about her.

I am so grateful to her for this book. she is once again helping me and inspiring me 20+ years later, not with the game of soccer but with the “game” of life.

Thank you, Bri.

love the story

Loved hearing all the soccer stories and her journey. Narration was difficult to listen to. But she's a rock star and her journey is epic. Thanks for sharing.

Long awaited for. Fabulous listen

A must for any fan of U.S. women’s soccer. I have followed this team since the beginning and held Scurry up as an example for my 3 daughters (BTW we’re a non athletic family with no soccer players, but the story of the USWNT is so compelling. ) Scurry’s book adds another key chapter to the story of this beloved team and she does not disappoint. I recall seeing Scurry on t.v during the time she was suffering from concussion symptoms. I could tell something was really wrong. This book explains everything, the good, the bad, the sad and the disturbing. Briana Scurry is a great American patriot who we can all be proud of. Read this book, then read it again and then pass it on.

Scurry is an incredible force!

I am so glad I decided to listen to Briana Scurry read her own words. It put a weight and a meaning behind them that I don’t think I would’ve felt hearing it in my own voice.
A world class athlete who went through some of the most difficult things a person can go through and made it through to the other side. I highly recommend this book.
