Publisher's summary

A daughter's heartbreaking and tragic story of losing her parents—and hope for those walking their own journey through grief.

Theo Boyd had always been close to her parents. Her father was a Texas peanut farmer, rancher, and preacher; her mother, deaf from a young age, was the glue that held them all together. Then one summer day in 2019, everything changed when Theo’s mother died in a tragic accident on their family farm. As Theo began to process this loss, her marriage started to unravel, adding another painful layer to her grief.

Meanwhile, Theo continued to care for her father who was shaken to his core by the tragedy. Nothing could erase the agony he felt from losing his love and soulmate of over 50 years, and one night he chose to escape his pain by ending his life. Theo suddenly had to learn to live without the two people who were her constant love and support—her parents.

In My Grief Is Not Like Yours, Theo gives an unforgettable account of how quickly life can turn to grief. Beautifully woven, this book is threaded with memories and raw emotions that are seldom discussed. Theo shows listeners how she endured the unimaginable. She walks beside anyone navigating through their grief, helping them feel less alone and guiding them to hope and healing.

“We are all unique, in life and in death. We are born, we live, we die, and we grieve, but my grief is not like yours.” (Theo Boyd)

Beautiful Storytelljng

I am so pleased to have met Theo in the College Station Barnes & Noble this past weekend. I finished her book in one sitting. I found myself relating to so many of the stories and connecting to her love and loss of her mother as I lost my mom in January 2024. Like Theo, my parents have been married a very long time....65 years. My daddy has lost his best friend and no void can fill that space. In the time mom has been gone, I have gotten to know parts of dad's life I never knew and have been able to see him through new eyes of appreciation for the provider and caretaker he was for me as a child and for my mother when her health began to decline. He will always be my daddy! Thank you for your beautiful tribute to your parents and the legacy living through you.

Straightforward book about grief!

Theo Boyd tells it like it is; a powerfully emotional experience of loss and grief from her perspective. As a person who’s experiencing grief, I appreciate the veracious account of her life.

It’s not a sappy book that promises each day will be filled with sunshine. Grief can be a dark, lonely, confusing place that we can’t simply snap out of or get over.

As candid as it is, it’s equally heartening because Theo provides tools (glimmers of hope) that the listener can apply to their own experience, and yes, it’s different for everyone.

A raw, honest look into complicated grief

Theo’s love for her momma and daddy shine so brightly throughout the book that I felt like I was on the farm with them. I appreciate her honesty and transparency in sharing the emotions and events of losing her parents, taking us inside her grief with her. I honestly felt like I was there with her and my heart was breaking alongside hers.

The love in this book is palpable. She is brutally honest about her hardest days but also reminds us that we all need to give ourselves grace and forgiveness while we are grieving. We deserve to love and care for ourselves when going through complicated grief. As someone who has lost both my brother and father to suicide, this was a difficult book to read but also so encouraging, so relatable, and so full of truth. I read it from beginning to end without putting it down.

Theo shares her beautiful journey with us to help us heal in our grief journey but I believe it also helps in hers as well. Sharing is healing. I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever lost anyone they love to suicide or in a complicated manner. Theo shows us it is possible to climb out of the darkness and into the light. Beautifully Written

This book was a great introduction to complicated grief. Theo shared her personal stories and drives home the idea that everyone grieves differently. The advice provided about one’s own grief was very helpful along with the advice on how to care for others who are grieving. 10/10 would recommend!
