Critic reviews

"Sensuous memories and unfulfilled desires help build tension between the leads, and fans will enjoy the expansion of McMaster's detailed setting." ( Publishers Weekly)

Oh, my! Best yet.

Just the right balance of character, plot and steam. Also, for me, willing suspension of disbelief was (amazingly) not a problem. Loved the strong tortured characters in this one. Smart. Skilled. Crafty. Had my son wondering why I kept volunteering to walk the dog for him. 😉

giant plot hole

good book, if one disregards the massive plot hole... the writer keeps going on about the fantastic senses of the infected.. and somehow the main love interest can pretend to be two people at the same time

Fun read

The author hit her stride with this book. The technical aspects of writing, plot, pacing, character development, dialogue etc have all improved from the first one. This was my favorite of the series. The two characters have conflicting goals which makes the anticipation of the developing romance more enjoyable. In some of the other books the drama between the characters seems a little forced and therefore a little tiresome. Very enjoyable read!

Great- even with the Clark Kent plot

“The girl had gumption … perhaps she might last longer than a week, unlike the previous Mrs. elfin,
she of the decapitated head incident.”
Ah, my favorite kind of romance, filled with danger flirting between a dark, dangerous man and an
even more dangerous woman, she of the femme fatale buttons. I much preferred this to book 2’s debutante Lena and her scruffy verwulfen Wil.

“Would you like another button?”
The chemistry between Rosa and Lynch is so scorching I barely concerned myself with the Clark Kent conceit where merely wearing glasses hides his identity as Superman. Here, Rosa is undercover for much of the book, in the Nighthawk den, surrounded by Bluebloods with their supernatural senses, and yet no one detects her steamwork hand or matches her human scent with their quarry, recognizing her as the Humanist fugitive Mercury. And yet it all worked for me: the spy thriller, the steampunk-horror mystery, and the burning romance between two fierce yet fragile people. Even the narrator, who drives me nuts with her male voices, worked for me.

This series just gets better and better.

Rosa is looking for her brother, thinking he was captured by the Night Hawks so she infiltrates the organization as a secretary. Low and behold the Night Hawk and especially Lynch are not what she thinks they are, and romance follows. This book is better because I like both the main characters really well. In the last book the heroine was a bit annoying. The story reminds me a bit of an old Jude Deveraux book The Raider. In that one of the main characters were playing two people. Also the few sex scenes that were in the book were steamy. I look forward to Perry and Garrett's book, this book has only wetted my appetite for more. The narrator is the same as the last book and overall she does a good job.

Enthralling

There’s just enough mysterious intrigue and dramatic irony which when paired with forbidden attraction is simply excellent. Whether you’re a romantic, prefer strong female characters more modern and present day in their behavior, or one that likes a good paranormal story this will appeal to you. My favorite of the series far.
