About this listen

From celebrated New York Times best-selling author and winner of the Pulitzer Prize Rick Bragg comes a poignant and wryly funny collection of essays on life in the South. Keenly observed and written with his insightful and deadpan sense of humor, Bragg explores enduring Southern truths about home, place, spirit, table, and the regions' varied geographies, including his native Alabama, Cajun country, and the Gulf Coast. Everything is explored, from regional obsessions with college football and fishing to mayonnaise and spoonbread to the simple beauty of a fish on the hook. Collected from over a decade of his writing, with many never-before-published essays written specifically for this edition, My Southern Journey is an entertaining and engaging listen, especially for Southerners (or Southerners at heart) and anyone who appreciates great writing.

Critic reviews

"Rick Bragg says Southern storytellers speak as if they're slowly chewing each word, savoring the sound and meaning. And that's just the way he presents this collection of his published essays.... His use of metaphor and rich descriptions comes across especially effectively when spoken." (AudioFile)

I need to re-evaluate

I've given 5 stars to many books but have never written a review. I now feel obligated to return to my previous "5 star" rated books and drop them down a notch. THIS is a 5 star book! I'm a 50 year old Southerner born and raised. I still live 20 minutes from where I was born. This book IS the South. I laughed, I cried, I reminisced. I miss my grandmother just a little bit more today than I did yesterday. So many stories reminded me of her. Get this book if you want to know the real South. And get this book if you're a Southerner already, I can't put into words how much this book spoke to me.

Best book I've ever listened to

The author was recommended to me by a friend so when I found his books on Audible I thought I'd give it a try. His storytelling made me laugh and cry and tugged on my Southern roots. His narration was superb and really the best way to get the full experience of his books. I felt a loss when the book ended but I will definitely be giving it a re-listen at some point.

Lovely Stories But Enough With The Food

I love Rick Bragg. His writing, his delivery, the whole package. But. I do not want to keep hearing about what an overweight man ate that he should not be eating. He tells us he has health problems related to his weight and then he goes on and on about how much he loves fried food. I'm worried about him. Save Rick Bragg.

Listen to Rick Bragg read this well worded tale

I was highly entertained listening to Mr. Bragg tell his stories of Southern living. There are untold skeletons in the closets of the South. Mr. Bragg doesn’t deny nor dwell upon them. But I digress. Take a trip through bayous and poboy shops, football stadiums, churches, and fishing holes. Every minute is entertaining. And darn funny sometimes too. MR. BRAGG, IF YOU READ THIS, I’D LIKE TO BUY YOU A CHILI DOG AT THE VARSITY + ONION RINGS ;))

Great book and his voice made it better.

I love holding books in my hands but I love Audible for when I am out walking or cleaning. I am more than glad that I chose this book to listen to, the authors voice makes the book even better.

Stories That Remind You of Home

Would you listen to My Southern Journey again? Why?

I've listed to My Southern Journey at least four times through....the peaceful, thoughtful amble through short stories as told by the author makes you want to come back over and over. It reminds me of the old timers sitting on the front porch day after day- the same stories....just different. It reads like the journal of a common man with an eye to see the beauty of day to day life in the deep south.

What about Rick Bragg’s performance did you like?

Who better to tell the story than the one who wrote it? The inflection in his voice tells humor, sorrow, loss, bewilderment and so much more at just the right time.

Incredible storyteller

Rick Bragg uses words to paint pictures of the Southern culture like no other. And like many Southerners he pokes fun at himself and his people.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to laugh and be immersed into what it’s like growing up in the South.

As a girl from the south, this made me laugh, cry and drift back in time wrapped in warm memories. It warmed my soul to the core. One of my all time favorites!!!

My Southern Journey

I too am a Southerner. My earliest memories are of Montgomery AL and the Air Force base in the early 1960s. Rick Bragg and his memories and adventures brings me to tears. He is one of my favorite new Southern writers. Southern food and people are the best.

Almost perfect.

I love Rick Bragg’s writing. It’s smart and witty but still as comfortable as a soft summer night. My only wish was that all the food chapters were spread out more and not in succession. I felt almost nauseous at the amount of lard and mayonnaise described. 🫢😂
