 Ganz klassisch kommt daher, was gegen ein Verbot aufbegehren wollte. Mit einem seiner früheren Werke war der Philosoph vor der erhöhten Warte einer Hamburger Kanzel derart in Ungnade gefallen, dass entscheidende Passagen nicht veröffentlicht werden durften. Im Grunde deshalb betritt Nathan als reicher Kaufmann aus Jerusalem die Bühne. Sein Erscheinen soll zur Aufklärung von etwas beitragen, das von anderer Seite her im Dunkeln zu halten war.

Der weise Nathan ist Lessings Spätwerk, es ist an Reife nicht zu überbieten, Kernstück die Suche nach der einzig seligmachenden Religion. Die Frage kristallisiert in der berühmt gewordenen Ringparabel, umringt von bewährten Elementen der Dramatik. Dazu zählen neben seinem Aufbau in fünf Akten Rhetorisches, Sprecher, die sich abwechseln und abgebrochene Sätze. Stellenweise zu lustig, um eine Tragödie zu sein, andererseits aber zu versöhnlich, um einen tragischen Ausgang nehmen zu können, wird hierin der Zeitraum des Waffenstillstands während des Dritten Kreuzzugs einen besonderen Sinn ergebend erhellt und auf seine Bedeutung für die weitere Entwicklung hin abgeklopft.

False advertising

It's not Nathan der weise but rather a commentary on the play. I would not recommend this.
