About this listen

After the horrors of Istvaan V, Horus declares outright war against the Imperium. In the shadows of the Emperor's Palace, powerful figures convene.

Their plan is to send a team of assassins to execute the arch-traitor Horus and end the war for the galaxy of mankind before it's even begun. But what they cannot know is that another assassin is abroad already, with his sights firmly set on killing the Emperor.

Loved it

James Swallow at his best! I went in loathing the Officio Assassinorum and now found a new love for them. This book helps you better understand the clades of assassins, how they prosecute war, why they look as they do, and build an empathy for them. Spend the credit, buy the book and understand Exitus Acta Probat (the outcome justifies the deed) Clade Vindicare's motto.

Slow burn but worth it.

This story fills out a lot of questions of how the hidden. world works. Definitely slow start.

One of the best yet in the series!!!

Loved this book from start to finish. It fills in a lot of the picture with the imperium and its inner workings especially in regards to the assassins.

Great read

The book gives a good look into how assassins in the settings work. The story was interesting and the performance was stellar. Defs recommend.

Good, Not Great

Likes:
Humans in a human story
Secrecy, stealth, intrigue
Unique (and vile) antagonist
Accurate portrayal of a brutal universe

Dislikes:
Roller coaster tempo and thematic consistency
Way too many characters for a single narrator
Squandered opportunity at some real horror

If you liked “Legion”, there are *some* elements here to enjoy. The story didn’t do much to push Heresy storyline, but that didn’t bother me. The reader needs patience with this one: the tempo ranges from long periods of mystique building with slight advances and shot bursts of incredibly-paced brutality.

Great storyline.

Excellent voice narrating and fun character surprise appearances. Lots of action and the plot moved quickly.

Favorite HH book.

This book has it all: Horror, Mystery, Action, etc.

Probably my favorite Horace Heresy book, and the lead cast aren't even Space Marines. Wish there was more like this, but Warhammer "Horror" books I've read are closer to "Noir". Just read it. You won't be disappointed.

Insightful

I especially liked the insights into other organizations aside from the Astartes. Starts off as a crime mystery which was also intriguing. I kept waiting and holding my breath for them to get the bad guy. Good performance. Enjoyable listen.

Refreshing take on non-astarted stories

except for a few plot holes, i enjoyed thos book thoroughly, specially being an xcom lover, this brings the fantasy of such a squad in the 30k universe

Great Book

Yes it may be fluff and not necessary to the main overarching story, but if you enjoy learning about some of the galaxy's politics and the Assassinorum, this is a good book. and Jonathan Keeble did an outstanding job narrating. With the multitude of characters, he made each one unique and easy to follow who was talking.
