About this listen
The Sunday Times Thriller of the Month
Expertly researched and visionary in scale, international number one best seller Ken Follett’s Never is more than a thriller. It imagines a scenario we all hope never comes true, one that will keep you transfixed until the final moments....
A stolen US army drone.
A shrinking oasis in the Sahara Desert.
A secret stash of deadly chemicals.
Each is a threat to the stability of the world but individually are problems that can be overcome. In the diplomatic arena though, everyone will have a different way of dealing with such a threat. And when those in charge disagree and refuse to back down, it will kick off an international chain reaction with potentially catastrophic consequences: a world edging closer to war....
Now three people must work tirelessly and with the utmost skill to stop that from happening:
A spy working undercover with jihadists.
A brilliant Chinese spymaster.
A US president beleaguered by a populist rival for the next election.
The only question is, in a game of brinksmanship can the inevitable ever be stopped?

Story
When Ann Waite discovers a shipwreck in Algoa Bay she is stunned to find survivors: a scarred sailor and a little boy. As the man walks away into the distance alone, Ann is left to raise the young child, Harry, in place of the baby she tragically lost at sea. Disaster and hardship befall Ann and Harry, and desperation drives them into the path of the mysterious shipwrecked man once more. Ralph Courtney has recently escaped Robben Island with two fellow prisoners and is destined to seek his fortune at Nativity Bay, the fabled place about which his father told him stories.

William Warwick has always wanted to be a detective, and decides, much to his father’s dismay, that rather than become a lawyer like his father, Sir Julian Warwick QC, and his sister, Grace, he will join London’s Metropolitan Police Force. After graduating from university, William begins a career that will define his life: from his early months on the beat under the watchful eye of his first mentor, Constable Fred Yates, to his first high-stakes case as a fledgling detective in Scotland Yard’s arts and antiquities squad.

Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is a drifter. He’s just passing through Margrave, Georgia, and in less than an hour, he’s arrested for murder. Not much of a welcome. All Reacher knows is that he didn’t kill anybody. At least not here. Not lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone. Not in Margrave, Georgia. Not a chance in hell.

Story
One hot Monday morning in 1976, Albert Spaggiari engineered the European crime of the century. A bank president in Nice, France found his vault welded shut—from the inside. Spaggiari and his gang of 20 men had dug a 25-foot tunnel from the city's sewer system into the bank, where they spent a weekend cooking meals, drinking wine, and clearing millions of dollars in gold, jewelry, gems, and cash. Here is the breathtakingly compelling story of Spaggiari, his “sewer gang,” and the most daring, outrageous theft of the 20th century.

NEVER.. For Our Children
The accumulation of seemingly unrelated issues marching slowly & inexorably towards the unseen abyss. The way the story is put together & how quietly it is written only enhances the terrible methodical reality of how these happenings come to pass. Ken Follet is a Master Storyteller.

My best Ken Follett book so far. I could not stop listening.
I don’t like cliff hanger endings, but this was a brilliant end to this thriller.

Great Listen but Jesus Ken; leaving it there?
I found this a good listen and generally enjoyed it although I found the bit of box ticking tiresome and I suspect Ken might be doing some sort of penance for previous sins of bias.
But Ken, did you really have to leave it there? I suppose you did otherwise how would you end it but going from absolute tension to the end and nothing, wow. There must be a better way. I was hanging out to know how this was all going to work itself out to bang finished.

Wonderful creation
Follet at his best with great new emphasis in developing female characters as main figures. And still, my hart sank at the end…

Slow with strange ending
The story and characters developed too slowly for me. There were 3 main storylines/characters however they never actually had any relevance to each other or entwined properly.
The end was a HUGE let down. I couldn’t believe that was it! As others have said, it was as though he got bored with the book or he had completed the required number of pages and just stopped writing!! The mind boggles.
