Publisher's summary

An enemy on her tails, an innocent at her side, and a dangerous power within her that could destroy them all. Jayci Lee melds Korean folklore with modern Americana in this fiery new series.

Sunny Cho aspires to be the dullest, least interesting person in any given room, which can be challenging for a nine-tailed fox spirit. So she drifts from city to city—staying clear of any and all attachment—and keeps her fox buried deep inside her. It is better this way. She would rather live as half of herself than risk losing control of her terrible powers.

Ethan Lee, a friend she left behind eight years ago, is a brilliant and distractingly hot PI. When he tracks her down and asks her to help him find his brother’s murderer, Sunny knows her uneventful life is about to be turned upside down.

Traversing the mortal realm and the world of gods, Sunny and Ethan discover their quest is much more dire than mere vengeance, and their friendship might be…more. An ancient evil is stirring, and Sunny is faced with an impossible choice: save the worlds from annihilation or claim the love fated by the heavens.

I cannot wait to get my hands on the next one!” —A. Y. Chao, the Sunday Times bestselling author of Shanghai Immortal

The Lore

I have always been drawn to the kitsune, 🦊 from the Japanese lore. So when I saw this book I was immediately drawn to it. I did not know that Korea had its own version called the Kumiho. 🦊 Once I started Nine Tailed I couldn’t put it down. This story is very fast paced! Jayci Lee takes you on a journey across the world that leaves you wanting more. Now, I know this book has a lot of mixed reviews, and I think that it is a good book. Here is where I took a star away. I will admit that some of the lines in the story are a bit cringe but over all this story made me happy, isn't that what books are meant to do? I wasn't a big fan of the spicy scene, and I wish YA would not have that. especially since a lot of younger teens read YA. A couple of the characters felt one dimensional, and I wish the author had taken more time to delve into their personalities and fill them out more. This book with maybe 100 more pages of depth and some editing would be a solid 5 ⭐. I still recommend it 100% though!

Fabulous Fantasy

This was an amazing modern version of an ancient Asian mythology, beautifully written with real characters, intense relationships, action and tragedy. It is the first of the series and I can’t wait for the next one!

So good with modern twist!

I grew up reading all the Korean folklore when I was a child in Korea. This story is so refreshing since it takes place in modern times and yet it has the basic background stories of old Korean folklore. I love the fact that nine tailed foxes are not evil and cunning. They are just misunderstood. And the chemistry between Sunny and Ethan is so hot! I just wish they get together already! I mean there are very steamy scenes but I want more please! The narrators did an excellent job portraying the characters. I could feel the anguish and emotional turmoil by listening to her beautiful calm voice. Well done! I can’t wait for the next book!

folklore

I loved this book and can't wait for the next book in the series. The mix of American lifestyle and Korean Folklore was beautiful and the characters were so vivid and well developed.

Entertaining short story of folklore filled with heroines

Well drawn out protagonist. Great use of Korean folklore. Loved her smart mouthy akin to Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Glad I listened

So interesting. I know so much of the Greek and Celtic people, but it is so cool to hear of the Korean culture.

Perfectly balanced

I don’t usually get books that don’t have lots of reviews and what not but I just had a good feeling about it. I am so glad I got this book!

The romance was good, the words she used to describe spicy parts of the book weren’t cheesy, the main character was as usually the defensive type but it wasn’t overdone like I’ve read before. She is a very likable character.

I do wish there was more time spent describing the characters because I just imagined her as Ahri from League of Legends lol but that’s okay.

I was worried when I first started it because it’s modern and in the US but it quickly left the US and became more traditional and magical!

I can’t wait for book 2 <3

Author- I listed to your note at the end and I want you do know I love Sunny too, she’s a beautiful flame. In the next book allow her more romance and relaxation, I could feel her stress and tension through the whole book and I felt bad for her.

Beautiful Story

This is my new favorite book. I absolutely loved the Korean culture and mythology! I don't know much about Korean cultures but I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this and learning about these myths. The story is so beautifully written and the reader is just fabulous. the story itself is a beautifully, tragically, hopeful romance. love or duty? fight, or run? it's not necessarily edge of you seat, but it keeps you wanting for more all the same. I hate that I'm so early on this series. I seriously don't want to wait for book 2.

Well crafted story without a satisfying conclusion

Loved the story. I am not a huge fan of snarky characters, but the emotional and self-reflective, sincere inner narration for the main character made clear this was a defence for a deeply loving and considerate heart, so it worked. The balance of romantic tension and sensual language with humor was perfect. My only complaint about the story was that it ended too soon in a way that left too many open ends. I expect a sequel soon, and will definitely read it.

The main audio narrator had a lovely voice and hit just the right balance of emotions in scenes. She employed a variety of different characters well. She could use some increased variety with her male voices, but it is a tall ask, perhaps too much from a female actress. Overall, I really enjoyed listening to her. The one jarring element were brief scenes in others POV voiced by another actor - especially one from the lead male. The scenes were good, but hearing the character voiced by the female actor throughout suddenly voiced by a strange male was an adjustment. It was a small nit, however, in the overall beauty of the work.
