Acerca de esta escucha

An award-winning journalist's intimate investigation of the true scope of domestic violence, revealing how the roots of America's most pressing social crises are buried in abuse that happens behind closed doors.

We call it domestic violence. We call it private violence. Sometimes we call it intimate terrorism. But whatever we call it, we generally do not believe it has anything at all to do with us, despite the World Health Organization deeming it a 'global epidemic'. In America, domestic violence accounts for 15 percent of all violent crime, and yet it remains locked in silence, even as its tendrils reach unseen into so many of our most pressing national issues, from our economy to our education system, from mass shootings to mass incarceration to #MeToo. We still have not taken the true measure of this problem.

In No Visible Bruises, journalist Rachel Louise Snyder gives context for what we don't know we're seeing. She frames this urgent and immersive account of the scale of domestic violence in our country around key stories that explode the common myths - that if things were bad enough, victims would just leave; that a violent person cannot become nonviolent; that shelter is an adequate response; and most insidiously that violence inside the home is a private matter, sealed from the public sphere and disconnected from other forms of violence.

Through the stories of victims, perpetrators, law enforcement and reform movements from across the country, Snyder explores the real roots of private violence, its far-reaching consequences for society and what it will take to truly address it.

Every lawmaker and law enforcer should read No Visible Bruises. I prodescuted DV and worked with DV populations in college and while I felt I knew a lot going into this book, Snyder’s comprehensive research and ability to look at the epidemic from all angles sheds new light on the factors that lead to abuse and the challenges of confronting it. This incredible book has inspired me to want to return to my previous work in DV, it feels so critical.

Rachel Louise Snyder documents the intricate and convoluted nature of domestic violence and abuse in America. As a researcher and reporter she crosses multiple disciplinary boundaries to understand and communicate the impact of domestic violence on society. I recommend her book as a must read for all police and politicians and any educational program exploring gender issues, sociology, or social work.

Profoundly valuable

Very important topic! I was not hit either. I was “coercively controlled” for twenty years. Thankfully, my marriage ended in divorce. I never felt I could ask for help getting out, because I had no bruises or broken bones...

This needs to be read by all...

We have so much to learn about domestic violence and should not feel shame to call it intimate terrorism. There is so much in this book I didn't know, did not expect it to be and never thought I endured it. Thank you Rachel Louise Snyder, your work is ultra outstanding and your performance is marvelous. I felt your pain in my heart, on every word. Your book has changed me. Thank you.

I found this book to be well-researched, well-written and containing a perfect balance of non-fiction facts blended in with a few stories about real people who have been terrorized and sometimes murdered by their significant others.

I would include every woman in my statement, except that the graphic nature of the descriptions of abuse are too painful and can perhaps trigger PTSD symptoms in the survivors of abuse. I am married to such a person and wish that she could read parts of it for the insight, but I recognize more than ever how dangerous that might be to her psyche.

This book makes the experiences of the women who have been abused vivid and personal. It sheds light on the abusers as well, not just on their crimes but on the way they have often been predisposed by our culture to release the beast within them, no matter how the beast was created.

It also helps to highlight the heroes in these stories, whether it is the women themselves or those who are their allies and saviors.

Finally it highlights programs that should be enacted in every city and state across the United States, if not the world, because they work. These programs cannot eliminate abuse in our current culture, but they can at least save the lives of many women and children.

This well researched and thoughtful account into my inner world.
And the world of all women whom like, myself, are to carry the shame and apathy and indifference of the judicial and social systems in place to keep them invisible beyond noting the fact of either the woman’s life’s either ending or, coming apart, their motherhoods stolen from them, dignity, social standing, and their families and community victim shaming them instead focusing on the man who terrorize, Rob and kill them. This book takes the heat off of us. Shines a spotlight on who needs to take more responsibility for violence in our culture. The author clearly SpellS out exactly why a massive movement for Women, the victims of man’s violence is decades overdue. Who’s with me?

Will start a mass movement!

All the stars for this book. And the book I wish existed while I did domestic violence advocacy for 8 years in my 20s. Rachel Snyder breaks down domestic violence to its core with stories of survivors, and many stories where there were no survivors. She explains why we judge, especially why women judge, women in these situations—saying they’d never be in the same situation “hit me once and I’ll be gone!”. But it’s not like that. It doesn’t start with a punch, it starts with what seems like “love”. I also love how she talks with perpetrators who are trying to turn their lives around, and showing how difficult it is to break that cycle. Citing that we need to offer more support to them, almost like AA, to open the doors on this cultural epidemic and not allow it to hide behind closed doors of shame.
I am proud to say that I worked for an amazing organization that provided much of the support she discussed in this book, but it also put roadblocks in front of women. Things seem to be getting better with that now, but the numbers aren’t decreasing.
Everyone should read this book, as everyone whether you know it or not, knows someone who is currently or has been abused by an intimate partner.
And if you need someone to talk to, call my friends at First Step in metro-Detroit ❤️ (734)722-6800
