De Democratische Volksrepubliek van Korea is niet democratisch, het is geen republiek en het omvat slechts de helft van Korea. Remco Breuker kijkt in zijn vier colleges voorbij de mythes en beeldvorming en gaat in op wat Noord-Korea wél is. Dan blijkt Noord-Korea een feodale monarchie te zijn die niet geïsoleerd is, maar juist internationaal economisch heel actief. Zo verdient het een fortuin met drugsproductie en is het verwikkeld in grootschalige internationale mensenhandel. Toch onderschat de internationale gemeenschap Noord-Korea graag. We horen de holle retoriek en zien de karikaturen, maar missen nogal eens de boodschap. In zijn college behandelt Breuker het Huis Kim, de relatie van Noord-Korea met het buitenland, de internationale slavenbrigades en Noord-Korea als dreiging. We horen hoe het land in elkaar zit, waar het naartoe op weg is, hoe het dat doet en wat dat voor de rest van de wereld betekent.
