Skeptical at first, he ultimately begins to believe all Liv's fears are justified....

The last generation of Americans with a living memory of Jim Crow will soon disappear. They leave behind a collective memory of segregation shaped increasingly by its horrors and heroic defeat, but not a nuanced understanding of everyday life in Jim Crow America. In The South, Adolph L. Reed Jr.—New Orleanian, political scientist, and according to Cornel West, "the greatest democratic theorist of his generation"—takes up the urgent task of recounting the granular realities of life in the last decades of the Jim Crow South.

Two weeks before the U.S. entered World War I, a Chicago advertising executive visited the Department of Justice with a proposal - organize the country’s businessmen into a secret force of volunteer agents to ferret out and investigate enemy activities within the United States. I had no problem with the narration except it did run into the next chapter sometimes without notice. But it was no real problem. I enjoyed the story and listened straight through. I look forward to the next book and the building of all the characters.

Bad Narrator and Weak Story
The narrator struggled to depict characters individually. For all the men characters she used a deep, gravely voice that was overthetop. She didn't pause in between scenes, and it would get confusing. The story itself had a lot of problems. The main characters go on a hunt for a serial killer based on a picture of an unknown man and some vague memories. When the the real killer is revealed, it was meant to be a shock of who it was, but honestly, it just didn't make sense. I know the author explains why this was the killer but I didn't buy it and thought she chose him just for the shock value rather than really developing the story.
