About this listen

Torn between loyalty and love, a young prince will learn how much he’s willing to sacrifice as he tries to destroy the rebellion that threatens his throne in the exhilarating sequel to Bonds of Brass.

“A knockout.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

Gal’s destiny has always been clear: Complete his training at the military academy, prove his worth as a royal successor, and ascend to the galactic throne. When a failed assassination plot against Gal sends him and Ettian - his infuriatingly enticing roommate - on a mad dash through the stars, Gal’s plans are momentarily disrupted. But he was born to rule the Umber Empire, and with Ettian by his side, nothing will stop him from returning home and crushing the growing insurgency threatening his family’s power.

Yet nothing is ever that simple in war - or in love. Gal is captured by the rebellion during a skirmish and faces public execution, his grand fate cut short. To save Gal’s life, Ettian does the unthinkable: He reveals himself as the secret heir to the fallen Archon Empire and rightful leader of the rebellion...and, therefore, Gal’s sworn enemy. Now a political hostage in this newly reignited conflict, Gal must use his limited resources to sabotage the rebellion from within, concoct an escape plan, and return to the empire he’s destined to lead. And if that means taking down the man he thought he loved?

All the better.

Just WOW

Holy hell (rutt), that was a good one. I stumbled into this series by accident not even a year ago and I’m very glad that I did. It’s rare that a book sequel holds its own and maybe even has a shot at eclipsing the first.

Really enjoyed the switch of perspective from Ettienne to Gal. At first I was a little wary but I warmed up to it fast. Gal is a jerk but he definitely grew on me, even more than in the first book. The book was a good blend of emotions. I’m VERY glad the book didn’t end purely on an anxiety inducing note. Definitely a solid cliff hanger for a hot second buttttt it almost could be left just as it is, startling yet logical. Super excited for the next book. I really value Skrutskie’s balanced approach to storytelling. She never goes overboard on any one idea, mood, writing trope, etc. She lets the story flow naturally, but intentionally.

The beginning of the last hour (before the semi-expected but still surprise twist) was really sweet and had me choked up. The flame knight and emperors moment hit me right in the feels. Followed by Gal’s choice, that really rocked my world. The deep underlying sense of profound yet blossoming love between the 3 main characters is powerful.

Loved the book, have no complaints, really looking forward to the next.

I never review things but this series has captivated me from the start.

Keep rocking on Skrutskie, you got a way with words. Sky’s the limit with book 3, I really hope you follow your gut and stay true to the characters and narrative cus it’s rock solid.

A SEQUEL DONE RIGHT

At first I didn’t know how to feel about a pov change but this, This was incredible. I cried and laughed and cheered alongside the characters. It was honest and passionate in all the right places. This is truly one of my all time favorites.

Great Series

Loved the first audible in the series, and then was so excited to get to the second to discover the book is being read from the other characters point of view, and now by a different narrator who doesnt do the accent given to the character from the reader in the first book. Once I got past that, I still had to use the 30 second back button often as there was no real difference in the voice or tone of this narrator so its easier to lose track of who’s saying what. Also some strange pauses and emphasis at points that didnt really make sense. Overall love the books, just wish this audible would have got the same treatment as the last. Hope the bring back the first guy for the final book!

Great second book in the Trilogy

I’m totally invested in this series. I’m kind of a hard sell… I have to connect with the characters pretty quick which happened in book 1. After reeling over book 1’s bombastic ending I stopped my vehicle and downloaded book 2 and 3. Book 2 keeps the cadence going alongside effective volleying, I gave up predicting what was going to happen because I was to often wrong… so I just went for the ride. I just finished book 2 and instead of jumping into 3, I’m listening to 1 again. I find these characters refreshing, completely believable and the story genuinely compelling and exciting.

Yesss

This was amazing! I can’t wait to read/listen to the 3rd book!!! I seriously love how intricate and complicated the emotions and thought processes that Gal had throughout this book, it made the ending so much better!!!!

the torture of this pov

I'll be honest I only made it to chapter 10 and I just couldn't with the petty vindictiveness that was gal. the fact you have to endure the torture of it through the whole book is just mind numbing and any sense of joy the first book gave me was thoroughly crushed. so when I found out he's like this throughout most the book I decided it's not worth the emotional band width and that I should simple cut my losses

Good story, rubbish narrating

The narrator for the first book wasn't anywhere near the best I've ever listened to, but I sorely wish he would have been brought on for this book instead.
